The Last Mario Kart 7 Player Brings the Nintendo Network Era to an End

As a gamer with decades of gaming history under my belt, 2024 has been an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. The release of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 and Black Myth Wukong have rekindled the excitement that only new games can bring, while the Switch 2 leaks have kept us Nintendo fans buzzing with anticipation.

2024 is poised to become a momentous year in the world of gaming, with some unexpected hits like Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 and Black Myth Wukong captivating gamers, and persistent rumors about the Switch 2 leaving Nintendo enthusiasts eagerly awaiting updates.

However, the end of an era was just witnessed by many avid fans of Nintendo and its services.

Back in April, Nintendo officially shut down their Nintendo Network service. However, a user named @fishguy6564 has managed to keep it running unofficially. Nearly eight months post-closure, they’ve established an in-game loop on Mario Kart 7, making them the only active player still connected to the network.

4th November, 2024 marked the closure of the Nintendo Network following a malfunction in fishguy6564’s Nintendo 3DS device, effectively concluding an ongoing game of Mario Kart 7.

Due to a persistent Mario Kart 7 game session by @fishguy6564, Nintendo had no choice but to maintain their servers operational for the last seven months, even after they were shut down. This continuous operation of their servers, despite ongoing legal battles with Palworld, showcases an extraordinary effort by the video game titan.

Nintendo Network will be remembered fondly as a significant part of many cherished gaming experiences that players have lived through, such as spending nights camping out in front of GameStop stores during game launches in the 2000s or shouting “Fus Ro Dah” at the release of Skyrim. Moreover, the Pokemon Go craze of 2016 will also go down in history, as it encouraged many to trespass without a second thought.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I bid farewell to the Nintendo Network. It has been an integral part of my gaming journey, filled with countless memorable moments. Yet, I am confident that the world of gaming will keep evolving, offering new adventures and memories in the years ahead.

Despite the closure of the Nintendo Network, Nintendo continues to breathe life into nostalgia through their latest announcements, such as the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition and the introduction of the Nintendo Music App.

Next year in March, you’ll find Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on shelves. Meanwhile, if you reside in its supported areas, you can now enjoy the Nintendo Music App.
