The Last of Us Ending After Season 4?

Now we’re aware that the final episode of “The Last of Us” is on the horizon, as HBO has officially revealed when the acclaimed TV series based on the video game will conclude. The series made its debut in 2023 and was both a critical darling and a cultural phenomenon. Co-created by Craig Mazin and NaughtyDog games studio, “The Last of Us” is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a fungal infection has transformed over 95% of the global population into lethal zombies. The second season of “The Last of Us” is slated to air this coming April, although an exact release date remains undisclosed. And, as per HBO, it will carry us up to the midway point in their adaptation of the video game franchise.

In a chat with Deadline, Francesca Orsi, a high-ranking executive at HBO, hinted at the possible conclusion of “The Last of Us”. She shared that there’s no definitive or final plan as of now, suggesting that things are still up in the air. However, she seems to be leaning towards a four-season arc for the series. Initially, it was speculated that Season 2 would cover half of “The Last of Us Part II”, with the remaining content covered in Season 3. Yet, it looks like HBO is aiming for a more leisurely approach when adapting this beloved game. Orsi added:

As a film enthusiast, I can’t definitively say for sure, but it seems we might be embarking on a trilogy of sorts. If my predictions hold true, this season kicks off the story, followed by two more installments to wrap things up. Fingers crossed!

Her statement aligns closely with what show co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann shared with Deadline last year. They mentioned that upcoming seasons will delve deeper into the video game narrative, similar to how Season 1 developed the exceptional Bill and Frank episode. As Craig Mazin stated, “We believe we won’t be able to tell the full story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and exploring intriguing paths, which we started a bit in Season 1 as well.” Moreover, he suggested that the narrative might necessitate Season 4.

What to Expect From ‘The Last of Us‘ Season 2

In the upcoming season of “The Last of Us,” we can expect to encounter several captivating and menacing new characters, most notably Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, who was the primary adversary in “The Last of Us Part II.” Alongside Pedro Pascal (as Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie), this season will also welcome Catherine O’Hara, Isabela Merced, and Jeffrey Wright to the cast. The storyline for Season 2 will resume after a significant time leap from the conclusion of Season 1, where Joel, Ellie, and Joel’s brother Tommy (played by Gabriel Luna) found a new home following the devastating attack on the Fireflies’ base.

During the discussion, Francesca Orsi hinted at what viewers might see in the second season of The Last of Us. Alongside Abbie, Joel, and Ellie, they’ll encounter multiple groups of established survivors. She described these factions as “groups competing for survival that unfold as a captivating survivalist ensemble,” adding that they possess a unique quality in the way they portray themselves.
