As a seasoned movie buff with decades of film viewing under my belt, let me tell you that I’m utterly thrilled about “The Life of Chuck.” Having had the privilege to watch Mark Hamill and Mike Flanagan collaborate before, I was already excited for their new project. But when Hamill shared his surprise at its non-horror nature, I found myself in a similar state!
He openly expressed his thrill and astonishment over the movie “Chuck’s Life,” directed by Mike Flanagan, in which he co-stars with Tom Hiddleston. This film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novella bearing the same title. Besides them, the cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nick Offerman, Karen Gillan, Jacob Tremblay, Matthew Lillard, Harvey Guillén, David Dastmalchian, and Rahul Kohli. Hamill is continuing his collaboration with Flanagan following his role in the series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which is based on Edgar Allen Poe’s short story of the same name.
“I have an upcoming movie that Mike Flanagan directed, titled ‘The Life of Chuck,’ which is set to release in May. When I think about it, I’m taken aback by the collaboration between horror masters Stephen King and Mike Flanagan. I was anticipating a truly terrifying script. However, it turns out that this movie is not horror at all but rather a heartwarming, emotional piece.
It’s the story of a boy named Chuck, you see him at four different stages until he grows up to be Tom Hiddleston. And I’m telling you… They showed it at the Toronto Film Festival. I’d seen a screening at Mike’s house, but I saw it with an audience, and I can’t tell you what elation I felt, because they loved it, they laughed, everything… It’s so… I said, “I don’t know how you’re going to promote this,” because it’s completely indescribable. You just have to see it to believe it.”
‘The Life of Chuck’ Will Arrive in Theaters on May 30, 2025
In a departure from Stephen King’s usual horror genre, the film The Life of Chuck resembles his heartwarming classic, Stand By Me, more than any of his terror titles. It’s understandable that Mark Hamill was taken aback when he found out that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie at all. Mike Flanagan, who has masterfully adapted several of King’s horror stories such as the 2019 sequel to The Shining, titled Doctor Sleep, and the 2017 psychological horror film, Gerald’s Game, is currently working on a TV project based on King’s epic Dark Tower series. Additionally, he has an Amazon Prime series adaptation of King’s groundbreaking 1974 novel, Carrie, in development.
Currently, Flanagan and Hamill are enjoying the recognition for “The Life of Chuck”. Alongside Hamill’s glowing critique, the movie also bagged the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Previous winners of this award at TIFF have frequently earned Academy Award Best Picture nominations. This was true for both “Green Book” and “Nomadland”, which were both awarded the prestigious prize.
