‘The Office’ Casting Director Says NBC Wanted Paul Giamatti or Philip Seymour Hoffman to Play Michael Scott

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of virtual reality, I can’t help but draw parallels between the casting process of The Office and leveling up my characters in MMORPGs. Just as I grind through dungeons and questlines to find that elusive legendary item, Allison Jones and her team were on a quest to find the perfect Michael Scott.

Allison Jones, the casting director for The Office, disclosed that several well-known actors were contenders for the role of Michael Scott in the popular NBC sitcom, ultimately played by Steve Carell.

Jones dropped in on the podcast, Office Ladies, which is co-hosted by sitcom stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey. There, she shared some behind-the-scenes details about the cast selection for the show that continues to have a dedicated fan base.

Jones recalled our initial encounter with the network when Greg Daniels presented a roster of actors, and they suggested Philip Seymour Hoffman, followed by Paul Giamatti or someone similar. At that point, Jones stated she was so disillusioned she didn’t believe either actor would be interested because at the time, TV was considered less prestigious and comedy was seen as the lowest rung on the ladder.

She remembered that “The Office” marked a unique instance in her career, apart from “Freaks and Geeks,” where she could work with genuine individuals who didn’t need to be over-the-top comedic or stereotypically funny, which was often hard to come by.

At that time, NBC typically preferred sitcoms featuring stand-up comedians over major actors for their shows. It was unusual for them to pursue a “big name” actor like Steve Carell, who initially starred in another comedy series called “Come to Papa“. However, he eventually landed the role of Michael Scott on the same network.

Jones mentioned that Nancy Perkins, former head of casting at NBC Universal, had always believed Steve would excel in the role, but his dedication to the Tom Papa series necessitated them to try out other candidates for the part.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but express my awe at the extraordinary pool of talents we had gathered. Each one of them embodied their own unique take on Michael Scott, and it was a delightful spectacle! Patton Oswalt would have been an inspired choice, while Bob Odenkirk would have absolutely nailed it!

However, Come to Papa was canceled after four episodes, which allowed Carell to join The Office.

Michael Scott wasn’t the only character that had multiple actors competing for it. Initially, actress Jenna Fischer was not considered for Pam but instead tried out for Angela, a role she eventually portrayed. Additionally, Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, Kristen Schaal, and Zach Woods were also in the running for roles on the show that day.

Jones recollected, ‘There were well-known individuals sitting on that sofa.’ It was quite modest, almost shabby, he said.

The casting director has previously worked on TV series such as “The Good Place”, “Arrested Development”, “Veep”, “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, along with movies like “Barbie”, “Bridesmaids” and “Lady Bird”.

Due to its massive popularity, a sequel was initiated by Daniels and Michael Koman. Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore are set to headline an impressive ensemble cast that also includes Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Tim Key, and Eric Rahill. This new version will unfold in the same universe as the initial series, maintaining the mockumentary format it was known for.

The documentary team that famously captured the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin is looking for a new topic. They stumble upon a struggling historical Midwestern newspaper and its determined publisher who’s trying to breathe life into it by enlisting volunteer journalists.
