As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for delving deep into the intricacies of comic book adaptations, I find myself quite intrigued by the enigma that is Dr. Julian Rush in HBO’s “The Penguin.” The subtle nods to Scarecrow have certainly piqued my interest, but upon further reflection and considering my extensive exposure to Batman lore, I am inclined to believe that Rush may indeed be a different DC villain altogether – Hugo Strange.
The Penguin gave one of Batman’s most iconic villains the spotlight in his own HBO crime show, but another beloved antagonist might have been hiding in plain sight. While fans debate about the Easter egg online, the show’s production designer, Kalina Ivanov, has weighed in with her own thoughts on the tease. During her time in Arkham Asylum — where she was falsely imprisoned by her father, Carmine Falcone — Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) is “helped” by Dr. Julian Rush (Theo Rossi). Dr. Rush becomes Sofia’s closest ally once she is released, and uses his red light hypnosis therapy to unravel Oz Cobb’s violent childhood.
In Episode 4’s scene inside Dr. Rush’s office, some intricate Easter eggs related to the iconic Batman villain Scarecrow (portrayed by Cillian Murphy in The Dark Knight trilogy) were spotted. Among these, a mask and glove similar to those worn by Scarecrow, also known as Dr. Jonathan Crane, can be seen on Dr. Rush’s desk. This snapshot has sparked excitement online, with viewers speculating that Dr. Rush was initially planned for the role of Scarecrow in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. Responding to a fan’s query about the Easter egg, Kalina Ivanov addressed the issue on Instagram.
Kalina Ivanov stated that the reason for Dr. Rush wearing the Scarecrow’s costume in ‘The Batman’ is left up to interpretation by the audience.” Fans are unsure if the Scarecrow will appear in the ‘The Batman’ universe, although some speculate he may be the main antagonist for ‘The Batman: Part II’. However, this hasn’t been confirmed by Matt Reeves. If you’re a fan looking to purchase Scarecrow gloves for a Penguin cosplay, you might find it challenging to locate them as Ivanov mentioned.
“The hands are from Bali.”
Dr. Julian Rush Could Be A Different DC Villain
Some people think that Dr. Julian Rush might be Matt Reeves’ take on the Scarecrow character from DC Comics, but it seems odd for him to alter the supervillain’s background solely to include an Easter egg. So far, Rush doesn’t exhibit the same signs of fear obsession as Jonathan Crane does. Consequently, if Dr. Rush represents any DC Comics villain, it appears more plausible that he is portraying Hugo Strange instead.
Hugo Strange, a psychologist and professor, poses a significant threat to Batman. He is among the rare villains who have managed to decipher Batman’s identity by employing detective work and intellectual prowess. The nature of his antagonistic role varies across comic books. In certain narratives, he serves as the chief psychologist at the high-security Belle Reve penitentiary for supervillains, while in others, he works at Arkham Asylum or is confined within it. Dr. Rush’s red light therapy could be seen as an embodiment of Hugo Strange’s own prodigious intellect, which he utilizes to control and manipulate others.
Dr. Rush manages to get through the happenings depicted in “The Penguin,” and subsequently resumes his duties at Arkham Asylum following Sofia Falcone’s rearrest by Oz. At this point, it’s undecided whether he will make another appearance in the Batman universe; however, given Arkham’s significance within the Batman legend, there’s a strong possibility that Dr. Rush could resurface at some point in the future.
