As a passionate admirer of Colin Farrell‘s captivating performances, I found myself utterly gripped by the heart-wrenching finale of The Penguin. The emotional depth and intensity that Colin brought to his portrayal of Oz Cobb was nothing short of mesmerizing. The scene where he kills Vic Aguilar was a masterclass in acting; it was raw, intense, and left me feeling as if I had been punched in the gut.
WARNING. The following contains spoilers for The Penguin Episode 8!
In the final episode of “The Penguin,” fans were thoroughly moved for all the right reasons. Following his victory over Sofia Gigante (née Falcone) and sending her to Arkham Asylum, Oz Cobb (portrayed by Colin Farrell) eliminated the remaining vestiges of vulnerability from his life by taking the life of his dearest friend, Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz). Interestingly enough, Farrell held a similar disdain for this scene as viewers did.
Discussing their roles post-screening of the last episode of “The Penguin” (as reported by Variety), Colin Farrell and Rhenzy Feliz shared insights on filming a particularly poignant and heartbreaking scene. A striking moment occurs immediately following an intensely emotional exchange between their characters, marking one of the season’s most impactful scenes. According to Feliz, Vic and Oz’s intricate masculinity prevented them from openly expressing love, but it was subtly conveyed when Vic referred to Oz as family. However, all this is shattered when Oz transforms into The Penguin. Farrell described the atmosphere during filming as “there was a heavy, ominous vibe that night.” He went on to say that, during the scene where Oz kills Vic, the entire cast and crew grew to despise Oz’s character.
If you intend to make the audience develop an affection for the character, which I believe they already have towards Rhenzy’s Vic, then it’s important to note that the production team will also grow fond of that character.
Later on, Farrell expressed his own emotional response to the event. “It stripped away the last remnant of innocence,” he started. Even though he had to play Oz Cobb, a character devoid of emotions, Farrell could sense what Vic was feeling as his life seemed to fade away during the unexpected turn in the storyline. He went on to say:
A person who had poured so much of their life into something, endured immense losses, and remained devoted and loving, it was heartbreaking to witness that spark of life dimmed by the very person they had given so much to.
Oz Cobb “Withdrew His Love” for His Mother
Following Vic’s power failure, viewers endured a few more suspenseful sequences before the closing credits, in the final episode. The climactic scene revealed Oz Cobb fulfilling his long-promised penthouse to his mother, Frances (played by Deirdre O’Connell). Unfortunately, Frances was bedridden in a persistent vegetative state, trapped with her estranged son whom she had not loved for decades. This moment encapsulated Frances’ deepest fear.
During the question-and-answer session, O’Connell discussed the intricate dynamic between Oz and Frances, and how it ultimately led to her feeling utterly helpless. “I’m not sure if he was aware of it or not, and I can’t fathom how one could do it, but he withheld his affection,” she expressed. Filming that scene left O’Connell just as taken aback and uneasy as we were while watching it. She further added:
It was unmistakable in the room that Oz had withdrawn his affection, and I could sense it; a chill ran down my spine as a result. He handed me a token of sorrow.
As of now, Season 2 of “The Penguin” hasn’t been officially confirmed by HBO or Warner Bros., but given the impressive reception the series has received, it seems highly probable that Oz Cobb will reappear in another season. In the interim, Matt Reeves is busy working on “The Batman: Part II.” Oz Cobb has been confirmed to feature in the sequel, though the extent of his role remains uncertain. Currently, all episodes of “The Penguin” are available for streaming on Max. “The Batman: Part II,” scheduled for release on October 2, 2026.
