With Adele Lim, the brilliant mind behind Crazy Rich Asians, stepping up to direct, this sequel promises to be a fresh take on a classic tale that has stood the test of time.

The upcoming movie titled “The Princess Diaries 3” has secured its director, with Adele Lim, known for “Joy Ride”, taking the lead. Debuting in 2001, “The Princess Diaries” was a significant breakthrough for actress Anne Hathaway. In this film, Hathaway portrayed Mia Thermopolis, an American girl who uncovers her lineage to the throne of the fictional Genovian kingdom and learns her royal responsibilities from her grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi (played by Julie Andrews). The movie was a box office success, earning $108 million in the U.S., $165 million globally, all on a budget of $26 million. A follow-up, “Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement“, was released in 2004. For over two decades, fans have eagerly awaited updates about a third installment.

It’s been reported that the film has secured the services of director Lim, marking one of the most significant developments in the project so far. Notably, Lim is recognized for her screenwriting work on the 2018 hit “Crazy Rich Asians” and made her directorial debut with “Joy Ride” in 2023. Additionally, she has collaborated with Disney, contributing to the script of the animated movie “Raya and the Last Dragon”. Taking over from the late Garry Marshall, who directed both “The Princess Diaries” films prior to his passing in 2016, Lim expressed her enthusiasm for joining the project in a recent statement.

Chris Pine, who played Nicholas Deveraux in The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement, has also hinted at his desire to resume his character within the franchise. Unfortunately, there’s no confirmation yet regarding Julie Andrews’ return, as she has mainly been focusing on voice acting roles like Lady Whistledown from Bridgerton and Marlena, Gru’s mother in Minions: Rise of Gru.

Disney Is Going All-In on 2000s Nostalgia

Disney is putting significant resources into upcoming sequels of classic films from their ’90s and early 2000s lineup, such as “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Disenchanted,” which were exclusively released on Disney+ streaming service. However, “The Princess Diaries 3” might be different, as it could have a theatrical release instead. Similar to “The Princess Diaries 3,” “Freaky Friday” appears to be shifting towards a theatrical release rather than being exclusive to streaming platforms. It seems that Disney is looking to revitalize mid-budget films targeted at female audiences with both these productions.

“Two movies featuring Anne Hathaway, including ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ and a potential sequel for ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ are being developed after twenty years. Previously produced by 20th Century Fox, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ is now under Disney’s umbrella. Although Anne Hathaway has not committed to reprising her roles in either movie yet, Disney is eager to secure her return, as her participation in both films would significantly boost their marketability and box office performance.
