By the 1970s, pop culture had matured enough to look back on itself with nostalgia. One of the ways this nostalgia was expressed was through the TV show “Happy Days,” a sitcom that depicted life in the ’50s and ’60s as a tribute to that time period. The show mainly focused on the Cunningham family, particularly teenager Richie (Ron Howard), his younger sister Joanie (Erin Moran), and their friends within their social circle. Most of the action took place either at the Cunningham household or Arnold’s Drive-In, a popular hangout spot for everyone in Milwaukee.
In the cast of characters who didn’t belong to the Cunningham family on “Happy Days,” there was Ralph Malph (played by Don Most), whose humor frequently fell flat and left audiences laughing awkwardly rather than with laughter, and who found himself striking out with women from seasons 2 through 7. However, in season 8, Ralph’s character disappeared from the show, making a brief return for a two-episode guest appearance during the final season of the series. It appeared that Most was dissatisfied with both the trajectory of the show and his own acting career, leading him to decide that it was time for Ralph Malph’s “Happy Days” to come to an end.
Don Most worried he was too closely associated with Ralph Malph
Many actors find themselves in a predicament where they face difficulty finding new opportunities due to the strong association with iconic roles they’ve played. This issue seems particularly prevalent among TV actors, who may become typecast after achieving fame with a specific character and subsequently struggle to shake off that character’s influence on their career.
After seven seasons portraying Ralph Malph on “Happy Days,” Don Most started feeling that this might be a chance for him to branch out. This realization, coupled with about half of the show’s run, is what led him to depart from the series years before it eventually concluded. In an interview with Pop Goes the Culture TV in 2021, he explained, “I was worried that I was becoming too closely tied to that role, making it increasingly challenging for me to move beyond it.
Another reason most actors left “Happy Days” was because the quality of the show had significantly declined. This assertion held true as “Happy Days” is renowned for one of the most iconic moments in TV history, often referred to as “jumping the shark,” which occurred in Season 5 when Fonzie (Henry Winkler) famously jumped a shark on water skis. By the time Ralph Malph, played by Most, semi-retired in Season 7, the show had already moved past its post-“jump the shark” phase, suggesting that it might have continued to deteriorate further. Thus, it seemed like an opportune moment for Most to depart the series before any potential decline became more pronounced.
Most thought he’d get more work if he turned down a raise
The decision for Don Most to depart from “Happy Days” at the end of Season 7 wasn’t a random one. Instead, he was in contract negotiations for Season 8, using this opportunity to gauge his career prospects. Paramount, the show’s production company, was prepared to raise Most’s salary substantially to keep him on the team. Seizing this leverage, Most proposed an intriguing counteroffer.
In simpler terms, Paramount was informed by Most that he was content to carry on working on “Happy Days” at his current wage. However, instead of accepting additional payment, Most requested that Paramount grant him the chance to pursue acting roles within their studio outside of “Happy Days”. To his astonishment, Paramount didn’t show any interest in this proposition.
With growing conviction, Most decided that playing Ralph Malph was a dead-end he had to extricate himself from before it became more entrenched. Consequently, he declined all offers from Paramount and chose not to rejoin “Happy Days” for Season 8. However, his willingness to return for guest spots in Season 11 suggests that, at the minimum, their parting was not acrimonious – if not amicable.
