The Rings of Power Finale Confirms a Huge Lord of the Rings Fan Theory

As a lifelong Tolkien enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the intricate lore of Middle-earth, I must say that the revelation of Daniel Weyman’s character as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been nothing short of exhilarating. It feels like a dream come true to finally witness this iconic figure’s journey unfold on screen, especially with such an exceptional actor bringing him to life.

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has finally confirmed a long-running fan theory about one of the show’s main characters. Season 2 has seen Sauron (Charlie Vickers) pursue his quest for Middle-earth domination after Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) uncovered Halbrand’s true identity as the Dark Lord last time around. Now, the show has finally revealed the real name of the tall, magic-wielding friend dubbed the Stranger (Daniel Weyman), and it’s exactly who many thought he was. Of course, beware of massive spoilers for the Season 2 finale of The Rings of Power.

In the eighth episode of Season 2 of The Rings of Power, the character known as The Stranger confronts the Dark Wizard from Rhû for the first time since his brief appearance before the season finale. This villainous figure has been a recurring theme this season, as The Stranger gradually discovers his role as Middle-earth’s savior, with Tom Bombadil (Roy Kinnear) providing assistance. However, it was only now that “The Stranger” officially revealed his true identity as “Gandalf.” This long-awaited moment was met with a wave of excitement, serving as a fulfillment of the two-season build-up. The revelation aligns with a popular fan theory, adding an extra layer of satisfaction to the unfolding events.

Daniel Weyman, now officially portraying the legendary figure of Gandalf, shared insights about the exciting reveal of his character’s genuine persona with The New York Post. Remarkably, it turned out that he himself wasn’t entirely certain he was embodying the renowned sorcerer until filming the finale. The masterminds behind Amazon’s The Rings of Power had meticulously safeguarded Gandalf’s identity, even leaving Weyman astounded as he admitted, “It was only when I filmed that scene that I found out I would be saying those very words.” Despite his initial uncertainty about the character and being content with playing an unfamiliar figure to fans, embodying Gandalf was a long-held dream for Weyman.

There was much speculation about who he would turn out to be. To be honest, it wouldn’t have bothered me if he had portrayed any other character, either familiar or new. Yet, there’s an inescapable feeling that stirs within the child in me, saying ‘hang on, you’re going to embody this beloved, heartwarming character that everyone recognizes.’ That’s a truly remarkable moment that makes me feel as if I should pinch myself.

The Rings of Power Has Always Been Leading to This

For devoted followers of the series, the revelation that the Stranger was actually Gandalf had been a long-awaited moment. From the very start, when we learned he hailed from the stars and possessed a staff reminiscent of Gandalf’s and similar powers in the season finale, the Stranger never seemed like an outsider to those well-versed in the franchise. Weyman’s performance in Season 1, despite his limited dialogue, was spot-on as the future Gandalf. Even without knowing his name, it was difficult for fans not to recognize the warm and loyal demeanor of the Stranger. His close bond with the Harfoot hobbits, particularly Nori Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh), fueled their suspicions about his true identity.

As a fan, I’m thrilled about Ian McKellen potentially reprising his role as Gandalf in Andy Serkis’ “The Hunt for Gollum.” It appears we’ll see two versions of this iconic character simultaneously. Fortunately, these portrayals won’t overlap significantly since the storyline in “The Rings of Power” unfolds centuries before Peter Jackson’s acclaimed trilogy. Moreover, Weyman has done an exceptional job distinguishing his Gandalf from McKellen’s while still preserving the essence that makes the character so special. Although opinions on “The Rings of Power” remain divided, fans can take comfort in knowing that our cherished grey-haired wizard is being skillfully portrayed both on the big screen and on streaming platforms.
