In the TV lineup for 2025, The Rookie began its Season 7 run following autumn production. However, co-star Jenna Dewan was missing from the first two episodes. Given that she welcomed a new baby during the summer right before filming started for this season, it’s not surprising. Back in May, creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley had already hinted at Dewan’s absence from the early episodes of the season. With fans now inquiring about her missing presence, both the actress and series head have acknowledged her upcoming return to the series.
I found myself on a thrilling cliffhanger at the end of Season 6 finale of The Rookie, as it unfolded a daring prison escape involving my long-time nemesis, Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave), and the sociopathic ex-husband of one of our team members, Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee). This intriguing plotline is set to unfurl further in Episode 3, airing on January 21. Taking to social media, Dewan hinted at Bailey’s upcoming return, although Hawley had previously confirmed to Screen Rant when the character would resurface following her National Guard duty. In his own words: “You’ll see her again after her stint with the National Guard.
Yeah. I mean, Jenna had a baby, so we see her at the end of Episode 3, basically.
It’s uncertain yet how Bailey will reappear, but it seems Hawley hinted that the absence is due to the actress undergoing real-life adjustments, and fans shouldn’t anticipate a prolonged departure.
Jenna Dewan appears to be just as enthusiastic as before, and she’s expressing this joy through social media. On her Instagram Story (as reported by TV Insider), the actress from Step Up posted a heartwarming picture of herself and baby Rhiannon, their second child together with fiancé Kazee. Accompanying the photo was a caption explaining:
Someone was being born!
The series has been exploring prison break scenarios, with Nathan Fillion’s character John Nolan remaining alert due to the fear that his wife would be endangered if she were at home. As the third episode unfolds, we can expect more repercussions, especially since Bailey is returning to town. Given their situations, it seems they are both in peril, and based on the trailer, this installment promises to be one that fans won’t want to skip.
With both Jason and Oscar posing significant threats, it’s intriguing to anticipate how these events unfold. Given that Oscar has demonstrated on multiple occasions that he’s no pushover for the LAPD, it seems like we’re in store for an engaging plot. It’s unlikely the story will be wrapped up quickly, considering the series is once again adopting its traditional approach, which includes extended, serialized elements focusing on one or two major storylines throughout the season. The prison escape could potentially span the entire season, or at least the first half of it.
Regardless of your choice, the upcoming episode and rest of this season are definitely worth tuning in for. Additionally, there are numerous other plotlines to anticipate beyond the prison break, implying that anything could happen next. As we’re only seven episodes into the new season, who knows what twists and turns await us! Tune in to The Rookie on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, or catch up with a Hulu subscription the following day.
