Edgar Wright’s movie adaptation of “The Running Man”, produced by Paramount Pictures, is gearing up for its release, with just seven months until it hits theaters on November 7th. The cast seemed eager and well-prepared to create a powerful impact in cinemas, as they showcased their readiness during the studio’s presentation at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum stage during CinemaCon last Friday.
Glen Powell, one of Hollywood’s most active actor-producers, stated that he has never put more effort into a movie than he did on the one they recently completed a week ago.
As a fervent Stephen King fan, I was thrilled to be part of an exhilarating panel alongside Wright, Powell, Brolin, and Domingo. During this dynamic gathering, we unveiled exclusive footage from the upcoming movie adaptation of “The Running Man,” a novel penned under King’s alias, Richard Bachman. This gripping tale is set in a dystopian America of 2025, where a repressive regime employs bloodthirsty game shows to quell the discontent among its oppressed populace.
In this grim tale, we follow Ben Richards, a man driven by desperation due to his ailing daughter’s medical needs. To alleviate his financial woes, he decides to participate in a well-known spectacle called “The Running Man”. This grueling contest sees teams of assassins pursuing competitors, with the length of survival directly influencing the competitor’s earnings. However, the producers and killers will soon discover that Ben is determined to shatter the rules and uncover the sinister truths hidden behind this popular show.
Brian Robbins, head of Paramount, warmly introduced the team with a nod towards the original narrative as a chilling tale. He expressed his belief that this movie would be the uncontested blockbuster for November. The motivation behind Robbins’ desire to produce the film stemmed from Wright.
According to Wright, he’s been an admirer of King’s original novel since his teenage years, but there’s a tale within it that’s yet untold – this is what primarily caught his attention. As for the movie “The Running Man“, Wright noted that it offers viewers someone to root for, referring to the main character, portrayed by Powell, as a fitting choice for playing a fugitive who leverages his innate charm to transform into a genuine action hero in reality.
Afterward, Wright invited Powell onto the stage who exclaimed that the concept for the remake is nothing less than exceptional. Powell further added, “This film isn’t merely infused with elements or tastes that viewers adore, it’s a complete feast.”
In this rephrased version, I tried to maintain the original meaning and style while making it more natural and easier to read for an average reader.
Powell went on to explain that the part demanded him to perform dangerous stunts like falling from buildings and enduring grueling scenarios. However, he didn’t anticipate it would be quite as authentic. He humorously added, “I guess this is what I receive for seeking advice on using a stunt double from my co-star Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, who is scheduled to appear during today’s event.
Said Wright of Powell: “He literally and figuratively through himself into it as you can see.”
Later, Powell warmly greeted Domingo and Brolin as his “two newest favorite companions.” He particularly admired Brolin, referring to him as the “best villain in the cosmos.” In response, Brolin described his character from ‘The Running Man’ as “insanely thrilling” and enjoyable to portray. Furthermore, Brolin acknowledged Powell’s dog, Brisket, who also features in the movie, by showing a photo of him on the big screen during the film.
As I watched the footage unfold before the Colosseum spectators, it struck a chord with me – Powell seemed worn out and overwhelmed by his personal crisis involving his daughter. Then, he confronts Brolin’s antagonist who hinted at being aware of his family turmoil. Tempers flared as I, Ben Richards, growled, “I’m not looking to bite the dust here, so take a hike.” In response, Brolin retorted, “That’s exactly why you can emerge victorious in this game.” Intermittently, glimpses of Domingo emerged on stage dressed in a plush, purplish velvet tuxedo, serving as the event’s host and providing commentary.
The 1987 action film directed by Paul Michael Glaser, titled “The Running Man”, featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso, and Richard Dawson as its stars. In this adaptation, Schwarzenegger portrayed a falsely accused police officer who was given a chance for freedom by participating in a brutal game show.

For the latest version, William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, and Jayme Lawson join the cast. This project is a collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Domain Entertainment, produced by Wright, Simon Kinberg, and Nira Park. Additional production oversight comes from George Linder, James Biddle, Rachael Prior, and Audrey Chon.
