As a gamer and a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for action-packed dystopian thrillers, I can confidently say that Edgar Wright’s The Running Man remake is shaping up to be an exciting addition to my watchlist. With Glen Powell taking on the lead role, I’m already intrigued, but the recent addition of Katy O’Brian has sent my anticipation soaring!
Among the eagerly anticipated Stephen King movie adaptations, I’m particularly looking forward to Edgar Wright’s reimagining of “The Running Man.” This ’80s action flick made for a gripping watch, and I share Glen Powell’s enthusiasm about his role in it. With production now underway, the film has been confirmed as a 2025 release, slated for November 21, 2025. However, what really gets me pumped is the recent addition to the cast.
Actress Katy O’Brian, known for her role as Imperial communications officer Elia Kane in Seasons 2 and 3 of “The Mandalorian,” is set to appear in the upcoming movie “The Running Man” alongside Glen Powell, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Recently, O’Brian has been garnering attention outside of her “Star Wars” role, with appearances in the third “Ant-Man” film, a part in the 2021 release “Love Lies Bleeding,” and a spot in the next installment of the “Mission: Impossible” series as well.
O’Brian is an intriguing figure due to her multifaceted abilities and experiences. She is a martial artist, specifically with a black belt in Hapkido, and has also ventured into fitness as she earned a personal trainer certification. Prior to acting alongside Kristen Stewart in the movie “Love Lies Bleeding”, which offers a glimpse into the world of bodybuilding, she was a competitive bodybuilder herself. This year, this A24 production, which we’ve found exceptional, was released to critical acclaim.
Before appearing in hit shows like “The Walking Dead”, “Black Lightning”, and “Westworld”, O’Brian served as a police officer in Indiana for some time. It’s worth noting that she delivered an exceptional performance in “The Mandalorian” as a character tasked with executing Moff Gideon’s orders, displaying her villainous side remarkably well.
It appears that “The Running Man” might offer a significant opportunity for her, considering her minor part in “Twisters” where she played a mechanic and team member under Tyler’s character for storm chasing.
In “The Running Man,” Glen Powell will portray the protagonist Ben Richards, originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 movie adaptation. Coincidentally, the storyline unfolds in the year 2025, making its release date fittingly timed. The plot revolves around Ben’s struggle to earn money for his family in a grim future by joining a TV station called The Games Network, which airs violent game shows controlled by the government. Following a series of evaluations, Ben is chosen to participate in these games.
According to the latest update, I’ll be squaring off against one of the other competitors in the show where Ben is battling day and night to keep himself alive. As laid out in the game rules, every hour Ben manages to stay alive, he pockets $100 and stays clear of capture. He can rack up additional cash for each law enforcer or hunter he takes down. If he makes it through all 30 days, the big prize is a cool billion dollars.
Film director Edgar Wright, known for hits like “Shaun of the Dead”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver”, is at the helm and penning the script alongside his “Scott Pilgrim” collaborator Michael Bacall. Get ready to mark your calendars as we eagerly await its premiere this coming November!
