The Simpsons Will Exclusively Air These Episodes on Disney+

As a long-time fan of The Simpsons, I must admit that the recent news about exclusive content coming to Disney+ has me both excited and a bit puzzled. On one hand, the prospect of four never-before-seen episodes is tantalizing, especially since the show’s 35th season was such a treat. But on the other hand, I can’t help but wonder if this move towards streaming exclusivity is a sign that the golden age of television as we know it might be coming to an end.

If you’re a fan of The Simpsons and haven’t subscribed to Disney+ yet, now might be the time! At Disney’s D3 event in Anaheim, creators Matt Groening, Matt Selman, Al Jean, Mike Price, Brian Kelley, David Silverman, and Nancy Cartwright announced that four brand new episodes of the iconic animated series will premiere exclusively on Disney+ starting this December. The streaming platform will also be hosting the 35th season of the show, which ended on May 19, from October 2 onwards.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the first of four upcoming episodes, the festive double bill “O C’mon All Ye Faithful,” debuts on December 17th, exclusively on our streamer. Following this, we have “The Past and the Furious” and “Yellow Planet.” The previously announced Halloween short is set to air in October. Interestingly, Hulu, accessible as part of a bundle for Disney+ users, will also be releasing two special Family Guy holiday episodes. This could potentially entice fans of both series to opt for the bundle. It seems like Disney might be exploring the idea of permanently moving these classic shows to streaming platforms based on this approach.

On Sunday, September 29, the Simpsons family will make their comeback on Fox for season 36. Kicking off the new season will be a spectacular premiere episode. Danny DeVito, who previously voiced Homer’s brother Herb Powell during the show’s second season, is set to reprise his role. While DeVito didn’t explicitly name Herb when discussing the news, he did hint that he would play a character he has portrayed before on the series. The episode, titled “Bart’s Birthday,” will also welcome some big-name guest stars such as Tom Hanks, Joel McHale, John Cena, and Conan O’Brien.

How Will Exclusive Simpsons Content Impact Disney+?

The Simpsons Will Exclusively Air These Episodes on Disney+

Could it be that exclusive content might entice die-hard The Simpsons fans towards Disney+? It’s challenging to foretell. Despite a decrease in viewership (with the 35th season averaging 1.74 million viewers, a considerable drop from its initial season average of 20 million viewers), The Simpsons still enjoys widespread affection. As per a report from Parrot Analytics dated November 2023 analyzing a span of 90 days, “The Simpsons has generated the fourth highest demand among any TV show in the United States, with a multiplier of 58.9 times the average title in the market.”

On the negative side, Disney+ currently holds exclusive content of The Simpsons, including some shorts that haven’t resonated strongly with fans of the show. Although Disney+ will premier an upcoming Halloween short, the beloved Treehouse of Horror episode is scheduled to air on Fox for its 25th edition (airing on November 3). This season’s synopsis hints at a politically-themed episode, timed perfectly for the US presidential election and featuring a stop-motion segment.

“Huge monsters born from political anger stand ready to destroy the town, a 19th-century Mr. Burns is startled on Thanksgiving by the spirits of his mistreated workers, and Homer forms an extraordinary connection with some alien denim in a remarkable stop-motion journey that can be best described as… ‘The Denim Chronicles’.”
