As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of aviation combat simulations, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation that rivals even the most nail-biting dogfight sequence. The news about Top Gun 3 has sent shockwaves through the community, and I find myself just as surprised as Greg Tarzan Davis was when he found out about it.
Following the massive success of Tom Cruise’s highly anticipated Top Gun sequel in 2022, it was only inevitable that people would wonder “What’s next?” Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of the death-defying actor and the rest of the Maverick crew on the big screen. There have been murmurs from actors like Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, and others about their excitement for a third Top Gun, but one franchise veteran has expressed surprise by those early reports. He also shared some insights regarding the status of the threequel.
At the Los Angeles debut of ‘Gladiator II’, Greg Tarzan Davis, best known for his role as LT Javy “Coyote” Machado in ‘Maverick’, conversed with Brandon Davis about the upcoming film ‘Top Gun 3’. Putting it in his own words:
We’re anxiously awaiting its proper destination. When the announcement dropped that Top Gun 3 was in the works, honestly, it caught us all off guard. All of us are in a group chat, exchanging messages like “Did you hear that? What’s happening? Is this true?” Once it became reality, I found myself on set with Tom, and we talked about it.
In an unexpected twist, the former star of “Grey’s Anatomy” revealed during the red carpet premiere of Ridley Scott’s sequel that neither he nor the cast had prior knowledge about another film in the series being developed. This came as a shock to us all since in January, Deadline broke the news that Paramount was working on a sequel with Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell attached, along with director Joseph Kosinski potentially returning or producing, and Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison also involved. Moreover, it was disclosed that screenwriter Ehren Kruger was penning the script’s draft. Isn’t it fascinating how things unfold?
It’s fortunate that the discussion group for “Top Gun: Maverick” remains active, allowing cast members to communicate via messages about the film. Later on in an interview, Greg Tarzan Davis shared that he had received inquiries from relatives wondering if he was actually flying at the time. In the group chat, Davis humorously noted that Glen Powell seemed particularly puzzled by the news.
On the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – Mission Not Impossible,” Greg Tarzan Davis will be sharing screen time with Tom Cruise. So, during work, he might just casually bring up the topic with the actor. Davis has disclosed this fact and also offered some additional information on how Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer are handling the project.
He’s primarily concerned with the story being accurate rather than just seeing it for profit reasons, as was the case with the previous production which made a fortune. This is also true for Jerry Bruckheimer; they are passionate about storytelling and engaging audiences. If we can’t deliver on that front, I’m not sure if there will be a third installment, but we are putting in a great deal of effort to make it happen.
Given the resounding acclaim and adoration Top Gun: Maverick received from audiences, some 35 years on from its ’80s predecessor, it’s understandable that Tom Cruise and the filmmakers are reluctant to rush into making a third movie without careful planning. Recently, Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that there is currently no script for the sequel, hinting that we might have to wait a while. However, they have discussed potential ideas with Tom Cruise, who seems to be on board with them.
In addition to Greg Tarzan Davis, other cast members from the film “Maverick” have voiced their thoughts about a potential third installment. Jennifer Connelly expressed her willingness to participate in the next project, while Lewis Pullman shared he is still not privy to many details. Collectively, it appears that Davis and his co-stars are keeping an eye out for any news regarding the movie, which also seems to be the case for enthusiastic fans.
