As a connoisseur of films and a strong advocate for fair labor practices, I find myself torn between my admiration for the ambitious project that is “40 Acres” and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding its production.
40 Acres’ creators, who brought us the dystopian thriller featuring Danielle Deadwyler (that premiered at TIFF last year), have acknowledged issues with budget overruns during filming, which unfortunately resulted in some local crew members and suppliers not being paid on time, as reported by IATSE, a U.S-based union.
As I oversee the production of this grand Canadian-financed movie, I’ve encountered some unexpected costs that went over budget. But despite these hiccups, we’ve managed to meet our payroll deadlines each week and on time.” – Jennifer Holness, Producer.
As a gamer, I regret to mention that some of our partners are yet to be paid. This is something we’re giving our utmost attention to and have been working diligently with independent auditors to resolve every approved expense. We’ve made sure to keep our partners in the loop, assuring them that we’re fully committed to settling all outstanding debts.
Following the premiere of “40 Acres” at TIFF, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) made a statement revealing that the film’s producers had not fully settled the wages and debts owed to local cast, crew members, and suppliers.
The manufacturing process has not resolved all the due payments to certain actors and staff members. It’s disheartening to find out that the film 40 Acres is being exhibited at events like TIFF, given that there are substantial unpaid debts to its workforce and suppliers,” stated IATSE following the October 2023 shoot of 40 Acres in Sudbury, Ontario.
Holness communicated that those who were yet to be fully compensated following the “40 Acres” shoot have been assured they will receive their full dues once the film is sold at TIFF, with the latest correspondence taking place on September 3. She expressed that it had been challenging but through dedication, enthusiasm, and countless sleepless nights, they are now prepared to release a remarkable movie, aiming to sell it and settle the matter for their vendors.
The movie titled “40 Acres” is helmed by R.T. Thorne, with Deadwyler portraying Hailey Freeman. Hailey and her family, the last African American descendants to have settled in rural Canada post-Civil War, are the owners of a farm. They’re fighting desperately to protect their land against an aggressive militia determined to seize their 40 Acres for their own purposes.
40 Acres, an independent film, is being handled globally by Visit Films, except in Canada where Mongrel Media already secured the domestic distribution rights. Holness has chosen not to disclose ongoing negotiations for the global sales of 40 Acres, to prevent any potential conflicts with prospective business deals.
Apart from responding directly, IATSE couldn’t be reached for comments regarding the cost overruns in the 40 Acres project following THR’s contact.
