Among the new shows debuting in the 2025 TV lineup, one standout is the ABC sitcom “Shifting Gears,” which marks Tim Allen’s return to network television after the end of “Last Man Standing.” The family-focused comedy appears to be resonating with viewers, as it has just achieved a significant viewership milestone. To celebrate this success, Allen and his cast members recently posted a video on social media, in which Allen expresses a comment that aligns perfectly with his character.
The TV comedy “Shifting Gears,” debuted on January 8, has now been crowned as the top new comedy series on television. This is a significant achievement given that it’s only had three episodes broadcast so far. To mark the special occasion, the show’s official Instagram account shared a video starring Tim Allen, Kat Dennings, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. In the clip, Allen playfully criticizes his co-stars for their supposedly “slightly insufficient” thank you messages. You can watch the video to see this amusing exchange.

Based on recently disclosed information, it appears that the series Shifting Gears, produced by Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully, has seen significant success over the past couple of weeks. This television program marked the Alphabet network’s best series debut in six years, drawing in 16.95 million viewers after a week of cross-platform viewing. This represented a substantial 173% increase from the initial viewership numbers on the same day, which stood at 6.2 million. Additionally, the show also garnered a 0.87 rating among adults aged 18-49.
In this fresh television series, Tim Allen portrays Matt Parker, a car shop owner whose tranquil life is disrupted when his long-lost daughter, Riley, along with her children Georgia and Carter, move in with him. This show offers a classic blend of humor across generations, filled with humorous family antics. Joining the cast are Seann William Scott and Darryl “Chill” Mitchell. I believe the charm of the talented actors could be contributing to the program’s popularity.
Besides the primary actors, some familiar names have made or will make appearances throughout the series. The show brought in Brenda Song, a former Disney child star, and Jenna Elfman, best known for her role in “Dharma and Greg,” has also made a guest appearance. In an intriguing development, Nancy Travis from “Last Man Standing” is also joining the cast. As for whether any other co-stars from Tim Allen’s past shows will appear, only time will tell. However, there have been discussions about Zachary Tyler Brown (Zachary Taylor Thomas) from “Home Improvement” making a guest appearance.
Regardless of the specific factors driving the popularity of the comedy series “Shifting Gears”, its cast and crew appear to have stumbled upon a winning formula, as even unfavorable reviews from critics haven’t seemed to impact it negatively. As of now, ABC hasn’t renewed the show for a second season, but I wouldn’t be shocked if “Shifting Gears” manages to avoid cancellation in 2025. Only time will reveal how well the show performs in the future, and in the meantime, we’ll have to see if the cast can sustain their energy levels slightly more.
Every Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), you can catch new installments of the show “Shifting Gears” on ABC, or if you miss it, you can stream it the following day by subscribing to Hulu.
