This year, Saturday Night Live, having achieved its 50th year on television, is brimming with fresh revelations and tales about the show’s illustrious past. One such book has surfaced, shedding light on a significant event: former SNL writer and actor Tim Robinson’s strong response when Lorne Michaels extended an invitation to Donald Trump to host an episode during his initial presidential campaign.
Prior to assuming the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump was a regular on NBC, with “The Apprentice” being a significant element in their prime-time schedule. However, following his presidential campaign announcement, NBC dropped Trump as the show’s host due to offensive remarks he made about Mexican immigrants. Surprisingly, despite this, Lorne Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live, invited Trump to host an episode of the long-running comedy series.
The appearance of Trump on Saturday Night Live sparked controversy, as many associated with the show strongly objected to him hosting. Notably, Tim Robinson, a writer for SNL at the time, reportedly expressed strong disapproval over Lorne Michaels’ decision to invite Trump. According to The Daily Beast (via Variety), Robinson found it hard to understand why Michaels would choose that course of action, and his reaction was quite passionate.
“Lorne has lost his f**king mind and someone needs to shoot him in the back of the head.”
‘SNL’s Trump Episode Drew a Lot of Controversy
At that time, people on social media platforms like X (previously known as Twitter) were puzzled and frustrated about Donald Trump hosting Saturday Night Live. While Robinson’s response might have been a bit excessive, users found themselves expressing their confusion in various ways. One SNL viewer tweeted, “Isn’t NBC done with the racist, sexist bigot? It’s really shameful to profit while passing by an accident @SNLorneMichaels.
Regarding Trump’s hosting of SNL, it’s reported that Lorne Michaels advocated for the show to remain impartial. However, this suggestion sparked disagreement among the series staff, who felt they had unintentionally aided in Trump’s election as president. Despite Michaels’ insistence on presenting both sides equally, those close to the show found his stance questionable. The rule was that all candidates should get equal screen time, and there were concerns that this principle was violated by favoring the wealthy candidate.
After Donald Trump’s election, I found myself compelled to share my perspective on why it mattered so much to me that he took on the role of host.
Post-Trump’s election, I felt it was crucial to voice my reasons for wanting him as the host, and this is precisely what I did.
