It’s an unofficial rule at Hollywood news outlets.
Ask questions about President Donald Trump, no matter what the subject in question might be.
Reporters are eager to promote negative comments about the Commander in Chief. And, to be fair, the stars almost always take the bait.
Consider Tim Roth. The “Reservoir Dogs” alum weighed in on Trump this week per The Hollywood Reporter’s prompting. And, of course, Roth trotted out the “fascist” card while insinuating the Trump administration has Hitler-like goals.
The British star, 63, said his father fought against the Nazis in World War II. The Roth patriarch warned him a Nazi-style brand of politics will reach the U.S. sooner or later.
That happened in 2017, according to the actor. And it resumed Jan. 20 when Trump took the oath of office for the second and final time.
“I think we’re seeing what fascism looks like, or dictatorial political theory looks like in practice, in America right now. It’s just the beginning, though. They’ve been prepping it for a while. In his first term, he was getting ready, but they got invited back, and now they’re really ready. So we’ll see what’s coming. I’ve no idea. It’s depressing. It’s sad.”
Roth also predicted a dearth of serious, politically-charged movies moving forward.
Why?
Teanm Trump will clamp down on free expression.
I think they will go after the industry, because they always go after what potentially could harm them. So I think they will go after the arts, [so] I think [filmmaking] will flourish more in Europe and around the rest of the world. I think what people will start doing is leaving to work elsewhere, which I do anyway. I think it’s going to be harder to make films of consequence, as opposed to films of a more general nature or the streaming thing.
If political screeds suffer stateside it’ll be due to economics, not government pressure. Last year’s anti-Trump opus “The Apprentice” withered at the box office. No one wanted to see yet another hit piece against the populist leader.
Other progressive polemics have bombed, too, including “Mickey 17,” “God and Country” and “Fauci.”
Stars like Roth stood down over the last four-plus years as actual censorship ran wild. The actor seemingly staid mum as the Biden administration leaned on social media platforms to silence dissent. He also didn’t speak out as “sensitivity readers” censored classic books by Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl and Agatha Christie.
Roth looked the other way, at least publicly, after the Twitter Files exposed even more censorship.
Plus, we already have more than enough proof Trump won’t silence artists. Consider the late-night landscape, which has become an unofficial part of the DNC.
Has Trump taken action against Colbert, Kimmel, Meyers or Oliver for their nightly attacks on him? No. Did he do anything of the kind during his first term in office?
No.
Did he arrest stars for repeatedly wishing death upon him during his first term?
No.
Continue with the task given. Celebrity fear-mongering might persist during President Trump’s second term, as evidenced by Harvey Feirstein’s experience.
The actor and gay rights activist claimed on social media that Team Trump had banned him from appearing at The Kennedy Center. Trump recently took over the arts venue, vowing to eliminate programs like drag shows for children while restoring its value to art patrons.
Acting Kennedy Center director Rick Grenell denied the cancellation, personally inviting Fierstein to appear at a future D.C. show.
I’m the President of the Kennedy Center and first openly gay U.S. Cabinet official. I was appointed by @DonaldJTrumpJr to both jobs.
You aren’t banned. In fact, come do Hairspray or La Cage here at the Kennedy Center. This is your personal invite.
If you’re open to different perspectives and value inclusivity, let’s gather together.
