Expressing Forgiveness encapsulates life in America’s working-class communities. Kaphar blends sorrow and nostalgia, as evidenced by his depictions of sunset-illuminated houses and figures that have been carved with knife strokes. In artworks such as “For your prayer closet”, the artist creates a poignant beauty; by applying gold leaf and tar, he creates a space where one can experience both “divine elevation” and a sense of confinement
Other works by Kaphar share similar methods and color schemes that can be traced back to his earlier creations. As he puts it, “They draw from the same personal, emotional, and psychological reservoir.”
