Enthusiasts eagerly awaited a gripping espionage story centered around John Clark, one of Clancy’s most popular characters after Ryan, following the success of other Clancy adaptations like “Clear and Present Danger” and “The Sum of All Fears.” However, upon its release, the film received mixed-to-negative reviews from both critics and audiences, who criticized its deviation from the original source material. But, four years later, the movie has found a new fanbase streaming on Hulu.

Fervent followers of Tom Clancy hold John Clark in the same high regard as they do Jack Ryan. This character is a Navy SEAL turned CIA operative, renowned for his tactical acumen and relentless attitude towards covert missions. In Clancy’s debut novel Without Remorse, we find an intense background that portrays John Kelly (later known as Clark) dealing with both personal loss and military retribution.

The movie deviated from the original storyline, changing timelines and reworking significant storylines. Critics contended that this method weakened the impact of Clark’s origin story, and diminished the complex intrigue that Clancy was renowned for in his writing. Rather than developing the character beyond a flat, one-dimensional shadow of the familiar version, the movie focused on an abundance of loud action scenes.

‘Without Remorse’ Was a Rare Misfire for a Sheridan-Written Script

By 2017, Taylor Sheridan had already established himself with several successful films such as “Sicario” and “Hell or High Water,” even before he gained widespread recognition for his hit series on Paramount+ like “Yellowstone,” “Tulsa King,” and “Mayor of Kingstown.

In the film “Without Remorse,” he collaborated with Will Staples to script the screenplay, adapting Clancy’s 1993 novel. Although it appeared that Sherdian would deliver the authenticity and compelling storytelling that made his previous films critically acclaimed successes, his performance in “Without Remorse” fell significantly short of expectations. Similarly, Jordan’s portrayal of John Clark in this movie did not live up to the praise he received for his work in “Creed,” with critics finding little to commend about the film.

It’s fair to conclude that both the author and the actor have moved forward to even more successful projects. Sheridan is now widely associated with massive TV hits, while Jordan has received acclaim for his contributions to the Creed series, as well as roles in Black Panther and his latest film Sinners, a captivating vampire thriller that recently made its debut on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect 100% rating.
