A distinguished gathering honored the enduring impact of the renowned comedy and musical program, famously known as . In commemoration of its 50th anniversary, the show hosted a special event called SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, where numerous actors from the past half-century graced both the audience and the stage. This grand affair was orchestrated by Jimmy Fallon. As the evening commenced, it seemed an ordinary affair; yet, the unexpected occurred when Oscar-winner and his wife Rita Wilson abruptly exited the auditorium following Fallon’s announcement that the night would not feature any award presentations. Fallon commented:
Seems there’s been a mix-up. Tonight, we’re only hosting a concert, not an award ceremony. Just wanted to clarify this for everyone.
At that instance, Hanks along with his wife got up from their seats and briskly walked up the main aisle and exited the venue, which was just one of many humorous episodes during an evening packed with musical acts such as The B-52s, The Roots, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Eddie Vedder, Jack White, Backstreet Boys, Chris Martin, Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, Bonnie Raitt, Brittany Howard, and a stunning, age-defying display by Cher in a catsuit.
‘SNL50’ Celebrates a Great American Legacy of Comedy & Music
Tonight, February 15th, “Saturday Night Live” is set to broadcast a re-run of its very first episode, originally known as “NBC’s Saturday Night“. Back then, it was an unpolished show that would eventually transform into one of the longest-running TV series in American history. The journey leading up to that first episode has been depicted in the recently released film by Jason Reitman titled “Saturday Night“. Now, viewers who have watched this movie can witness how the first episode unfolded fifty years ago.
The celebration this weekend includes a special anniversary episode on NBC airing on Sunday night, officially known as SNL50: The Anniversary Special. This show will have appearances from famous figures such as Sir Paul McCartney, Robert De Niro, Paul Simon, Adam Driver, Steve Martin, Dave Chappelle, and Tom Hanks, along with many others. Recently on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, long-time SNL cast member Tina Fey shared that she’s part of a team returning to work on the special. She explained to Fallon that she is employed as a staff writer for the event, and she’s quite enthusiastic about it. Alongside her are Seth [Meyers], Paula Pell, Emily Spivey, and John Mulaney, all coming back as staff writers for the occasion.
Just like Saturday Night Live (SNL), even though the anniversary show will likely be well-organized, we can’t rule out a few spontaneous instances or surprise appearances by some of the numerous stars who’ve lit up the SNL stage throughout the past 50 years.
