Tommy Boy’s Director Recalled Matthew McConaughey’s Audition For The Movie And How He Filmed It In A ‘Room Filled With Mouse S—‘

From my perspective, and that of many other admirers of the film “Tommy Boy,” it’s an uproariously brilliant production and undeniably one of the top comedies from the ’90s. With its 30th anniversary (and growing), we’re discovering even more intriguing details about this Farley & Spade classic. The director, Peter Segal, has shared stories about Matthew McConaughey attempting to play Paul Barish (originally portrayed by Rob Lowe) and the incredibly pungent filming location he encountered during production.

Segal discussed various aspects of the movie “Tommy Boy” during an interview with Entertainment Weekly on its anniversary and 4K re-release. A fascinating point in the discussion was when he revealed McConaughey’s audition and the unique circumstances surrounding it. Although McConaughey was only known for “Dazed & Confused,” he asked to audition as production commenced. However, things got unusual when McConaughey decided to perform at a location covered with mouse droppings.

I recall filming a scene by the lake, and while I’d seen Dazed and Confused before, that was apparently my only exposure to McConaughey at that point in time. Later, we ventured into what seemed to be either a restroom or a boat house, located on the water’s edge. It was overrun with mice.

Oh my, it seems that audition tales are brimming with peculiar details like this one, but it’s undeniably an unusual option nonetheless. I can’t imagine many productions would welcome such an unconventional approach during an audition, except perhaps for Dave Eggers and his live rats in Nosferatu. However, it doesn’t seem to align with the 1995 midwestern comedy setting.

Segal openly discussed the predicament and managed to get Rob Lowe, a member of the Brat Pack, back in the mix. He mentioned this by saying:

However, that was the location of his tryout. Subsequently, Rob’s timetable shifted, leading us to select him instead. Admittedly, it was quite unusual for an audition, I must say.

As a film enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn that Bo Derek jumped on board the Farley film, essentially at the eleventh hour. In Tommy Boy, she brought Beverly, the cunning stepmother of Tommy Callahan, to life. It’s unclear whether someone else dropped out or a sudden conflict arose behind the scenes, but it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that Derek and the talented Parks & Rec actor joined forces, aiming to cause mischief for everyone connected to the Callahan family.

Regarding McConaughey passing on “Tommy Boy” due to his audition location, it’s clear he managed just fine in his career. His latest movie of this year, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” marks his return to live action after a six-year break (excluding his brief appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). The film has garnered positive reviews. Let’s hope he’s now more mindful about filming near animal waste. By the way, I’m planning to rewatch “Tommy Boy” again on Tubi and reflect upon its 30-year existence.
