Actor Jay Ellis, who appeared alongside Tom Cruise and Miles Teller as Lieutenant Reuben “Payback” Fitch in Top Gun, has given a hopeful update on the upcoming sequel. According to Ellis, Top Gun 3 is preparing for takeoff, with writers currently drafting the script. The highly anticipated movie, Top Gun: Maverick, was one of the key and successful films to emerge in the post-COVID-19 period. It seemed inevitable that a sequel would follow Paramount Pictures and star Tom Cruise, but it appears they are taking their time to avoid rushing the film for financial gain. Instead, Cruise prioritizes the quality of his stories, with writer Ehren Kruger likely working diligently to find the perfect tale.
Actor Ellis, known for roles in movies such as “Escape Room” and “Somebody I Used to Know,” along with shows like “Insecure,” recently shared some positive news regarding a sequel. Initially, he playfully teased about the title, but then shed light on the production’s current state: “The story for the sequel is going to be ‘Payback.’ Well, to be honest, they are still in the process of writing the script and refining the story. They aim to make it perfect.” Ellis further added:
Tom Cruise is meticulous about his work, which stems from his desire to deliver an exceptional experience to the audience. In essence, he aims to ensure that for the two hours they spend in the theater, the world outside vanishes, and they are fully immersed in pure entertainment. His main focus is on creating this escape for the viewers.
It’s equally important to ensure that the story isn’t merely created for cinematic purposes, but rather it’s crafted with characters so compelling that they capture audience attention.
The production of Top Gun 3 has been underway since January 2024, following approval from Paramount Pictures. Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski are confirmed to reprise their roles for this sequel. Additionally, Glen Powell and Miles Teller will return as their characters Hangman and Rooster respectively, joining Maverick once more in delivering awe-inspiring air combat scenes.
Can ‘Top Gun 3’ Be as Successful as ‘Top Gun: Maverick’?
In 2022, “Top Gun: Maverick” emerged as a massive box office hit, marking the first major movie release post-COVID-19 pandemic when cinematic experiences underwent significant changes. Yet, Tom Cruise reprising his role from three decades ago sparked enough intrigue to lure people back to movie theaters and once again experience the thrill of the danger zone. The film grossed approximately $1.5 billion at the box office, placing it as the second highest-grossing film of the year, surpassed only by James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Apart from being a blockbuster among audiences, it also garnered positive critical acclaim. It received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won an Oscar for Best Sound.
Achieving the acclaim of Top Gun: Maverick will be no small feat. The sequel was a captivating production that showcased Cruise’s exceptional talent, demonstrating he is more than just an action hero known for death-defying stunts in the Mission: Impossible series. He also excels in roles with well-developed characters. They aim to surpass their previous success, a challenge they eagerly accept.
