As a long-time gamer and comic book fan, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement when I heard that David Corenswet had been cast as Superman in the upcoming DCU film. Growing up, I’ve always dreamed of seeing an authentic portrayal of the Man of Steel on the big screen, and with Corenswet’s appointment to the role, I truly believe we’re one step closer to that dream becoming a reality.
As a gamer, I’m excitedly counting down the days until next year when David Corenswet puts on the iconic red cape to become Superman in James Gunn’s highly-anticipated DCU film. But before that, Corenswet is making his mark on the big screen this weekend in “Twisters.” Director Lee Isaac Chung shares that we were lucky to have Corenswet join the cast as Superman, and based on his performance, he’s going to knock it out of the park. In “Twisters,” I’ll be cheering him on alongside Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones in this thrilling new disaster flick, which serves as a sequel to the 1996 original featuring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
In an interview on the Inside Total Film podcast, Chung shared that during the filming of “Twisters,” the cast and team were rooting for Corenswet to land the role of Superman. He tried out for the iconic DC Comics character while they were working on the new sequel. According to Chung, Corenswet’s authentic innocence aligns perfectly with Superman’s essence, while also emphasizing that the 31-year-old actor embodies a larger-than-life presence.
While filming, I recalled David eagerly preparing for the Superman role. Quietly, many of us hoped for his success. Upon learning he was among the final contenders, we expressed our belief, “David truly seems suited for this part.”
“His impressive size and commanding presence make him seem larger-than-life. Yet there’s an unexpected purity about him that strikes me as very Superman-like. After returning from auditions in LA, he brought the essence of the Man of Steel back to the set with him. He doesn’t necessarily method act, but he does carry a certain aura related to his roles.”
Chung shared that he had a strong feeling Corenswet had secured the role in “Superman” based on his behavior when he came back to set from “Twisters.” In Chung’s opinion, James Gunn struck it rich by casting Corenswet as the new Superman, and he is confident that the “Twisters” actor will excel in the part.
After his audition, I recall having the strong belief that he had landed the role. It was an unusual sensation I experienced, as if he perfectly fit the part just by looking at him. He seemed right for it to me. Honestly, I think James Gunn has hit the jackpot with this discovery; he’s going to shine in the position.
David Corenswet Has Wanted to Play Superman for a Long Time
David Corenswet gained public recognition through his 2014 web series “Moe & Jerryweather,” where he acted as one-half of a comedy duo aiming to innovate television in the dynamic Hollywood industry. His first significant film role was in the political thriller “Affairs of the State” (2018). After some minor appearances in films and TV shows, he secured the role of River Barkley in Netflix’s “The Politician.”
Ever since 2019, I’ve harbored a lofty aspiration deep within me – to don the iconic cape and become Superman. The comparisons between my appearance and Henry Cavill’s on the internet only fueled this dream further. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, I openly shared my desire for a more hopeful portrayal of Superman in contrast to recent gritty depictions on the big screen.
“My dream role is to bring Superman to life with a sunny and nostalgic twist. While I admire Henry Cavill’s brooding portrayal, I yearn for a more hopeful interpretation of the iconic character in the next adaptation.”
I’ve been lucky enough to witness some truly enchanting moments during the past year on set, including a screen test between Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan that felt nothing short of magical. She’ll be bringing Lois Lane to life in our upcoming movie, and I can’t wait for everyone to see their chemistry. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with both of them.
One year ago today, David and Rachel auditioned for the roles of Clark and Lois. From the moment they read together, there was an undeniable spark. It’s been an incredible year working with two exceptionally talented, alive, and detail-oriented actors. I’m eagerly looking forward to sharing their performances with you in approximately a year and a half.
The movie “Superman” is scheduled for release to theaters on July 11, 2025. In the meantime, you can see David Corenswet in the film “Twisters,” which will debut on July 19, 2024.
