‘Ukrainian Modernism’ Photo Book Documents The Remains of Soviet-Era Architecture

Ukrainian photographer Dmytro Soloviov has spent many years traveling throughout his homeland, with the goal of capturing and preserving its remaining Soviet-era architectural structures as a means of safeguarding Ukraine’s modernist legacy amidst conflict. In collaboration with FUEL Publishing, Soloviov has compiled a 240-page book titled “Ukrainian Modernism“. This photographic exploration delves into the diverse history of Ukrainian Modernism, spanning from avant-garde constructivism to late Soviet Brutalism.

The photographer shared on Instagram that he journeyed from the conflict-ridden east, specifically Kharkiv and Sumy, to the western Carpathian mountains. His purpose was to record various structures along the way, including renowned landmarks like the Kyiv Crematorium and Saliut Hotel. Additionally, he aimed to capture lesser-known treasures such as the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station, which have yet to be documented.

Several architectural landmarks in Ukraine are deteriorating, not just from lack of care but also due to the ongoing geopolitical conflicts with Russia. Soloviov further explains that these buildings have been largely overlooked because of the cultural bias against the Soviet era. His aim with this book is to bring attention to this underappreciated yet incredibly rich modernist heritage of Ukraine and to firmly establish modernism as a crucial aspect of Ukrainian identity.

As reported by FUEL, this book includes three architectural postcards, and for every purchase, 10% will be donated towards the British Red Cross’s Ukraine Crisis Appeal.
