As a movie critic with a lifetime of observing human nature through the lens of cinema, I find myself deeply moved by the raw emotions unfolding across our nation following this year’s Presidential election. Like many, I’ve witnessed the power of narrative and its ability to unite or divide us.
Regardless of your political stance, this year’s Presidential election undoubtedly brought about significant stress and worry for many. Many people considered it one of the most crucial elections in U.S. history due to the numerous critical issues and rights at stake. Contrary to some predictions, the race wasn’t as tight as anticipated, with Donald Trump ultimately being confirmed as the next President of the United States, overcoming Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite her impressive two-month campaign and garnering support from several celebrities, the reactions today from her supporters are predictably filled with deep sadness and, in certain instances, dismay.
One of the many rights on the line, for some, was basic female rights, particularly a woman’s right to choose in regard to their very own body. Christina Applegate took to her X page and wrote, “Please unfollow me if you voted against female rights. Against disability rights. Yeah that. Unfollow me because what you did is unreal. Don’t want followers like this. So yeah. Done. Also after today I will be shutting down this fan account that I have had for so many years because this is sick.” As of now, Applegate’s page is still up, and she has posted again saying that her anger has calmed, but the decision to leave a certain social media platform was also shared by others.
Currently, Elon Musk holds the ownership of X, and as the election neared, he was one of Trump’s most vocal supporters. Consequently, if you have a look at an X page, you’ll find that much of its content is comprised of posts by Musk expressing support for the newly elected President. This has led some users to reconsider their association with this platform. On the other hand, Bette Midler appears to have removed her X page following her frequent postings there. Before departing, she left a quote from H.L. Mencken: “Every election is a sort of advance auction sale of stolen goods.
“When someone runs for public office, they are not addressing sensible people; instead, they face an emotional crowd that struggles to understand complex ideas. As such, the candidate must either pander to the mob’s emotions or risk being overlooked. Unfortunately, the person who is most cunning and average often wins in such cases. The presidency tends to attract these types of individuals as democracy advances. Over time, the White House comes to reflect the collective consciousness of the people, striving for a noble goal. On an extraordinary day, the everyday citizens will finally elect someone whose intelligence might be questionable.
Nancy Lee Grahn, a long-time star from the soap opera ‘General Hospital’, who has also been vocal about her political views against Trump, appeared to express similar feelings by writing, “I have exhausted all that I could do. I will be removing all my social media accounts for the safety of my daughter. I’m truly sorry. I hope God watches over us all.
Celebrities Voice Their Disappointment With the Results & Admiration For Kamala Harris
Actress Lili Reinhart, previously known for her role in Riverdale, expressed empathy towards the women who have accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct, after he was elected President for a second term. Reinhart made it clear that she stands in solidarity with them by stating, “I find it hard to comprehend the feelings of the women who spoke out about their sexual assault at the hands of Trump. Seeing so many people vote for their abuser leaves me heartbroken. I believe you, and I am truly sorry.
Many famous figures expressed their admiration for Harris on social media platforms. Viola Davis tweeted, “I’m thankful for your courage @kamalaharris. I appreciate your commitment to America’s values. I am and always will be proud of you.” Similarly, Niecy Nash shared on Instagram, “Thank you, Madam Vice President @vp. You have made us incredibly proud! Let’s keep the fight going, carrying your wisdom, brilliance, determination, and joy within our hearts.” You can find more responses below. Today, emotions run deep, and it’s understandable given how many hoped for a different outcome. In time, the commotion will subside, allowing the American populace to unite, strategize, and collaborate effectively without exacerbating existing divisions that could further stir up unrest.
