In Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” Walton Goggins delivered a standout performance that was particularly noticeable among those given by his fellow actors. As Rick Hatchett, Goggins and his girlfriend Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) checked into a Thai resort, but it quickly became clear that Rick had other plans beyond the resort’s amenities.
As a film enthusiast, I found it intriguing that my personal experience mirrored Mike Goggins when he traveled to Thailand for The White Lotus. Two decades ago, I too visited Thailand during a time of profound grief, having lost my first wife, Leanne Knight. Little did I know, when I agreed to be part of The White Lotus production, I’d be confronting my past in the very same country. Moreover, I hadn’t anticipated how this emotional journey would shape me, my acting, and ultimately contribute to the profound impact of the third season of this remarkable series.
Walton Goggins Visited Thailand While Grieving His First Wife Decades Before Filming ‘The White Lotus‘ There
In an interview with GQ back in February 2025, I shared some personal insights about my life and career. Our conversation eventually veered towards The White Lotus and the deeply emotional journey of my character, Rick Hatchett. I also divulged that filming the third season of The White Lotus in Thailand stirred up memories from two decades past. To be specific, it brought back feelings associated with a significant loss – my former spouse took her life, leaving behind a complex tale.
In the year 2001, when Goggins got married, his first wife, Leanne Knight, disappeared three years later. Goggins shared the explanation for this event.
Eventually, her choice became clear, and I must admit, it seemed irrevocable to me. The life beyond that point felt alien. For the next three years, I sought reasons – not to terminate it, but rather finding myself in precarious situations, ones that were debatable, not involving drugs or such, just immersing myself in diverse experiences and travels. I traversed virtually every corner of the world.
Among the destinations Goggins traveled to, Thailand was one of them. However, it wasn’t until his arrival that he hadn’t yet experienced the sensation of being back.
When Goggins Arrived in Thailand, “All of the Things Kept Coming Back”
To Goggins, Thailand served as a significant stop during his healing process after loss, and as he started working on the series “The White Lotus“, he encountered places that strangely reminded him of past experiences. Goggins reminisced about this.
On our initial stay at the first isle, it struck me that I had traveled this pathway previously. Then, when we moved to the next island, it became evident to me that I had certainly visited this sandy coastline before. I recognized the boardwalk as well. As more memories resurfaced, everything seemed eerily familiar.
As I found myself on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, wrapping up filming, memories of my past in Thailand flooded back to me.
Upon reaching this dock, an overwhelming sense of familiarity washed over me… It seemed unbelievable at first, but then it clicked. Yes, I recognize this dock. Oh my goodness, this is the room I stayed in twenty years ago! This is my balcony!”
“Twenty years ago, on my very first day here, I was in so much agony. As we disembarked from the boat, memories of that day flooded back to me. This was where we were filming all those years ago – all the equipment was just in front of the hotel I had selected online, on a tiny road in a small neighborhood.
Goggins admitted that there was a symmetry in his presence that he was still working through.
Goggins Has Come to Terms With His Past, but Rick Hatchett Never Did
When Walton Goggins thought about his past self in Thailand, he realized what he longed to do:
I found myself thinking, “Oh, how wonderful it would be if I could give that person a comforting hug.” I yearned to tell him softly, “You’ll make it through. Life goes on, and it does so for everyone if you can just persevere, embrace the journey, and keep moving forward, always seeking the solutions.
In an interview with Danny McBride, his co-star from The Righteous Gemstones, published in Interview Magazine in March 2025, Goggins was given considerable creative freedom in creating the character Rick Hatchett. This autonomy, to some extent, impacted Goggins’ approach when he revisited Thailand for a project.
On a specific day when I was all by myself in Bangkok, I stumbled upon an exceptionally cool restaurant for dinner which later turned into our frequent hangout spot. After enjoying a couple of whiskey sours, I felt a sudden impulse and thought to myself, “Why not, mate? Let’s explore the lively street. Let me witness it, let me experience it.
I’ve done similar things before, having explored various countries on my own for numerous years. However, eighteen years ago in Thailand, I didn’t have the courage to do what I was about to do because I was in a completely different mindset. So, I decided to let go and experience everything, saying to myself, ‘Why not? Let’s see it all.’ With a pleasant buzz, I stepped out of the taxi, ready for any adventures that awaited me.
During his initial visit and while filming “The White Lotus“, Thailand served as part of Goggins’ ongoing quest for spiritual enlightenment or self-discovery. Conversely, Rick Hatchett’s struggle with his past represented an inability to find peace with his traumatic experiences. Goggins noted that the tragic ending of “The White Lotus” was inevitable for Rick’s character. Hatchett seemed unable to perceive anything beyond a narrative he had been told long ago, which defined him significantly. Ultimately, he was trapped by this story.
The last scene of Rick drifting, to me, symbolized tranquility and perhaps an acceptance that the cycle of karma will persist. It felt like a liberation from suffering.
