Warner Bros. Discovery Shutting Down Boomerang and Moving Content to Max

Warner Bros. Discovery Shutting Down Boomerang and Moving Content to Max

As a seasoned movie lover with decades of nostalgia wrapped around the Looney Tunes and Scooby-Doo franchises, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness upon hearing about the demise of Boomerang. Growing up, it was my go-to place for endless hours of cartoon entertainment, and now it seems that the streaming void is swallowing yet another piece of our collective childhood memories.

It appears that Warner Bros. Discovery is continuing its cost-cutting measures across various sectors of its content production, as indicated by an email sent to subscribers. Regrettably, this includes the closure of the Boomerang streaming service at the end of September. Some content from Boomerang will be moved to Max, while it seems the rest of the content may vanish into the streaming abyss.

Boomerang initially debuted in 2000 as a cable network showcasing beloved animated series from Warner Bros., including multiple versions of Scooby-Doo, Tom & Jerry episodes, and an array of Looney Tunes shows, shorts, and films. Fast forward to 2017, Boomerang transformed into a standalone streaming platform, not only preserving classic cartoons but also creating fresh, unique content for its subscribers. Today, seven years later, despite Warner Bros. Discovery keeping subscriber figures under wraps, it appears that the platform is struggling financially.

Although it might seem frustrating for Boomerang subscribers initially, the email assures that they’ll be upgraded from their current $6/month plan to an ad-free subscription for Max at no additional cost. Given that the standard ad-free tier of Max usually costs $17 per month, this upgrade can be seen as a significant benefit rather than a drawback. The email further clarified:

“Max offers a variety of beloved Boomerang characters such as Scooby, Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, among others. While not all Boomerang content is accessible, you’ll gain entry to Max’s extensive library, featuring classic series, blockbuster films, original content, news updates, and family favorites like The Amazing World of Gumball, Teen Titans Go!, Lego Batman, and many more.”

Warner Bros. Discovery has Made Many Changes

Post the COVID-19 crisis, numerous production studios and streaming service providers found themselves needing to assess their financial losses and make tough choices regarding budget allocation. To achieve this, many opted for simplifying their operations by merging services, removing content from platforms, or abandoning projects that appeared unlikely to generate profit.

In contrast to other major studios in Hollywood, Warner Bros. Discovery has drawn significant attention due to a higher number of canceled productions. Notable projects like Batgirl, new Scooby-Doos, and the Looney Tunes’ Coyote vs Acme movie were among those terminated. More recently, the announcement of Boomerang merging with Max has sparked further criticism against the company and its leadership within the last few years.

From various perspectives, some people think Warner Bros. Discovery is being prepared for a potential takeover by Comcast due to its perceived financial vulnerability. Others argue that the company’s mismanagement over the past three decades has been the real issue. Regardless, this recent cost-cutting move, while not significantly affecting subscribers, has only added fuel to the fire for those eager to criticize the current leadership of one of Tinseltown’s legendary studios.
