As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the endearing low-fi gem of the Pokémon universe, “Pokémon Concierge,” will grace our Netflix screens once more with Season 2 this year, set to air on December 28, 2023. This unique installment in the Pokémon saga offered a fresh perspective as it marked the debut of the franchise’s first stop-motion animated series, deviating from the usual battle-centric content and instead providing viewers with an immersive, laid-back viewing experience. The story revolves around Haru, a hardworking young woman in her twenties who finds herself employed at a tranquil Pokémon resort and learns to prioritize self-care over work.
At the Pokémon Presents event for Pokémon Day, it was officially announced that Season 2 of Pokémon Concierge would premiere on Netflix in September 2025. Netflix shared a sneak peek (check below) about the series on their social media platforms, featuring some new Pokémon like Shinx with electric abilities, the flamboyant fire-type Arcanine, and water-type Corphish. As an added bonus, the initial four episodes of Pokémon Concierge can be watched for free on the official Pokémon YouTube channel until March 9, 2025.
The Pokémon Concierge received widespread acclaim from both critics and fans. The exceptional stop-motion animation that it employed created a unique atmosphere, unlike anything else within the Pokémon franchise. Currently, it boasts a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 17 reviews. One of the aspects praised was its departure from the traditional ten-year-old protagonist in favor of a twenty-year-old character, which allowed it to resonate with audiences that grew up with the original Pokémon series. With vibrant colors and a heartwarming aesthetic, it emphasized friendship values and has the potential to become a long-running addition to the Pokémon franchise, appealing to all ages.
‘Pokémon Concierge’ is One of the Best Entries in the Franchise
Developed by Satoshi Tajiri, Pokémon first appeared in Japan back in 1996 and rapidly gained worldwide recognition, often referred to as “Pokémania.” Although its fame is closely linked with this term, the franchise has continued to thrive in modern pop culture and experienced a massive revival in 2016 with the extraordinary global success of Pokémon Go. With numerous video games, a trading card game, an extended animated series that concluded in 2024, a live-action movie starring Ryan Reynolds, and most recently, Pokémon Concierge, Pokémon is currently believed to hold the title as the world’s most profitable media franchise.
Making Pokémon Concierge Season 1 available for free on YouTube temporarily suggests that Netflix has faith in the show’s success and believes that the first four episodes will entice viewers to catch up on Season 2 on Netflix in September. This strategy mirrors AppleTV+’s approach when they offered Season 1 of Severance for streaming on Roku Channels prior to Season 2’s debut. The gamble paid off for AppleTV+, as Severance has now surpassed Ted Lasso as their most-watched series. While it’s unlikely that Pokémon Concierge will become Netflix’s most popular show or even the most watched Pokémon series, it will certainly help broaden its reach to an audience who may have been unaware of its existence.
