As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating worlds of theater and musicals, the news of “Water for Elephants” closing its Broadway run leaves me with a mix of emotions. The circus has always been a metaphorical escape for me, a chance to momentarily forget the realities of life and immerse myself in a story that transcends the ordinary.
Water for Elephants has set its closing date on Broadway and will take its last bow on Dec. 8.
The stage version of the book was nominated for a Tony Award in the category of Best Musical, alongside shows like “Hell’s Kitchen: Illoise”, “Suffs”, and “The Outsiders”. However, it was “The Outsiders” that won the award. It also earned nominations for Best Book of a Musical, Scenic Design of a Musical, Costume Design of a Musical, Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Choreography.
As I recount my incredible journey, I find myself reminiscing about the exhilarating days of my youth when I leapt onto a speeding train, unsure of where fate would lead me after losing everything that truly mattered. Along this unexpected path, I discovered a unique sense of belonging among the eclectic troupe of a traveling circus. Moreover, I encountered a life and love that surpassed anything I could have ever dreamt of.
As a dedicated admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the recent musical is actually the second transformation of this captivating book, preceded by a 2011 film bearing the same title, which featured the talented Robert Pattinson and the equally impressive Reese Witherspoon.
The musical adaptation of “Water for Elephants” debuted on Broadway on March 21st, and it’s scheduled to embark on a nationwide tour in Baltimore during autumn 2025. Following its worldwide premiere in Atlanta in June 2023, the production made its way to Broadway, with Ryan Vasquez (from “Hamilton”) and Isabelle McCalla (known for “The Prom”) taking on the lead roles.
McCalla takes on her character once more in the Broadway production, sharing the stage with Kyle Selig, who was previously seen in Mean Girls. The principal cast also includes Gregg Edelman from City of Angels, Paul Alexander Nolan of Slave Play, Philippe Aymard from Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion, Stan Brown known for Homicide: Life on the Streets, Sara Gettelfinger from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Wade McCollum hailing from Wicked. Directing duties are handled by two-time Tony Award nominee Jessica Stone, with a script penned by three-time Tony nominee Rick Elice.
Frank Marshall, Steven Spielberg, and Kate Capshaw were some of the numerous individuals who served as producers on the film Water for Elephants.
