A poignant scene connected to the death of a key character in the finale of ‘The Wheel of Time’ season 3 serves as a rewarding adaptation of an unusual alteration made from the first season of the Amazon Prime Video series based on Robert Jordan’s bestselling books, ‘Wheel of Time’. Critics have often pointed out the many modifications made to the source material in this adaptation. Given the popularity of this book series, it’s understandable that readers feel frustrated by all the deviations. However, one change from season 1 has proven to be particularly impactful.
In season 3’s finale of The Wheel of Time, Siuan Sanche, the leader of the Aes Sedai, was slain by Elaida during a coup. This event coincided with Moiraine’s struggle against Lanfear, an adversary from season 3’s storyline in the Aiel Waste. Though Moiraine seemed to be losing her battle, having been weakened by Sakarnen, upon hearing about Siuan Sanche’s demise, Moiraine channeled her rage and sorrow to counterattack Lanfear, ultimately overpowering her enemy temporarily.
A Season 1 Moment Explains How Moiraine Knew Siuan Was Dead
Moiraine Swore An Oath To Siuan Sanche In Season 1
Immediately upon Siuan Sanche’s demise, Moiraine experiences an intense surge of pain, sparking curiosity about their unique relationship. While Aes Sedai and Warders typically share such bonds, it’s uncommon for Moiraine and Siuan Sanche to do so, given their romantic feelings don’t normally forge magical links in the world of The Wheel of Time. However, this emotional response can be explained by the oath Moiraine swore to Siuan Sanche during season 1.
In the first season of “The Wheel of Time,” Moiraine and Siuan Sanche devised a plan for Moiraine to be exiled from the White Tower. This strategic move enabled Moiraine to work covertly, managing the Dragon Reborn according to her own judgment without being influenced by Aes Sedai politics. This departure from the books resulted in Moiraine’s expulsion from the tower and swearing a sacred oath of allegiance to Siuan Sanche. After Siuan’s demise, this oath was no longer binding, which enabled Moiraine to sense Siuan’s death from afar, paving the way for her subsequent events.
The Wheel Of Time Had Been Setting Up Siuan’s Death For A While
There Were Moments Of Clear Foreshadowing
In the books, Siuan Sanche’s survival in “The Shadow Rising” might have come as a shock to readers. However, the TV series has been subtly hinting at her demise. First, the absence of Min and Logain from the White Tower this season could have suggested that Siuan’s escape from captivity wasn’t imminent. Second, the scene in Tel’aran’rhiod between Moiraine and Siuan was a clear indication that one of them wouldn’t live much longer in the world of “The Wheel of Time”.
