In some instances, actors seem perfectly suited for specific roles, such as Jason Momoa being cast as the DC Comics cosmic bounty hunter Lobo. Known for his portrayal of Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, in the DC Extended Universe, Momoa is slated to debut as Lobo in 2026’s “Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.” Fans are eagerly anticipating glimpses of Momoa donning full makeup for this role. However, it appears we might have to wait a while before those first looks become available online.
Previously, I was part of a compact gathering of journalists who attended a DC Studios presentation in Burbank, California, featuring co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. During our hour-long discussion, several heroes and villains were touched upon, including Jason Momoa’s Lobo. The casting for this character was confirmed late last year, and production on Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow has already begun. However, when the filmmakers were questioned about whether we might soon see an official sneak peek of the character, Gunn provided an explanation as to why it’s improbable.
It might take some time before I can be straightforward with you, as everything is currently in space exploration. With Superman, we had to film outside due to the extended shoot for weeks. So, we improvised by including something out there. As for Jason, I’m uncertain about the specifics. I don’t want to sound overconfident, but it doesn’t seem like a big deal yet. We won’t have to do an outdoor shoot in central London for three weeks, which would require us to release images of Lobo early, unlike with Superman.
In movie production, especially when blockbuster films shoot on location in public areas, it’s impossible to completely prevent people from taking photos and posting them online. As a result, it has become standard in the industry to anticipate poor quality smartphone snaps by releasing official images instead. This way, the audience can see characters as intended by the creators. For instance, during the production of Superman last summer, this approach was adopted by the filmmaker who shared a sneak peek of David Corenswet in costume as early as May 2024.
It appears that Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow won’t involve any Earth-based scenes in its upcoming DC movie. Instead, the entire film is being shot on secure soundstages due to it being a cosmic adventure. This means that DC Studios might not have to handle any damage control if leaks occur, as maintaining secrecy seems to be their preference, even amid public demand. For now, fans will have to content themselves with fan-made creations.
Originating from the minds of Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in the 1980s, Lobo is a notorious character within DC Comics circles. He’s recognized as a rambunctious, intergalactic mercenary who boasts incredible physical strength and fighting prowess. What sets him apart is his immortality; if so much as a tiny fragment of him survives destruction, he has the ability to completely regenerate his body and continue causing chaos across the universe.
Lobo hasn’t made his debut in movies yet, but he’s a favorite among comic book enthusiasts for years. This rich history is the reason behind introducing him early into the DC Universe. There was undoubtedly excitement to bring him to the big screen due to Jason Momoa’s affinity for the character. However, according to James Gunn, the main objective is to educate mainstream audiences about what comic book readers already understand. Drawing parallels with Deadpool and Harley Quinn, Gunn stated that the primary aim was to familiarize the masses with Lobo.
Personally, I’ve often found myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of new characters like Deadpool or Harley Quinn, only to hear people say, “Who is this character? I don’t really know them.” However, if you’re a comic book enthusiast, you’d recognize that Deadpool and Harley Quinn are significant figures with a large fan base. The same can be said for characters like Lobo and Deathstroke.
Gunn acknowledges that the main focus within the world of DC Comics often lies with the Trinity, but he aims to shift this perception. He went on to say…
Characters who enjoy widespread fan support, yet remain relatively unknown compared to icons like Wonder Woman, Superman, or Batman, are the ones that pique my interest for potential exploration within the DC Universe. Lobo has always been one such character that I found intriguing and wished to delve into.
Currently, enthusiasts are being asked to exercise restraint as they eagerly anticipate a sneak peek of Lobo. Featuring Milly Alcock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham, the upcoming movie Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow is inspired by the comic book of the same name penned by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Screenwriter Ana Nogueira has brought this story to life, while Craig Gillespie takes charge as director. Principal photography for the film commenced in mid-January.
The movie is scheduled to premiere on June 26, 2026, so we have some time before then. Keep checking back here at TopMob for updates about the project and its connection to the initial chapter of the DC Universe known as Gods and Monsters.
