Back in 2003, I found myself glued to my TV screen as NCIS made its grand debut. This series has since grown into a powerhouse franchise that’s hard to miss on television. As we move into its impressive 22nd season, it’s clear that NCIS continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
In the early 2000s, NCIS played a significant role in reviving the appeal of American police and crime shows. It quickly became an iconic symbol of this genre. The show focuses on a squad of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, offering a unique blend of suspenseful drama and occasional humor within the context of a serious police procedural.
2003 saw the debut of an adored ensemble, who, over the span of 21 years, have all departed from the original series in different manners. The main character, Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), along with Special Agents Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander), Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), Forensic Specialist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum) each added their unique appeal to the series. We’ll explore where these original cast members find themselves now, delving into some seasons beyond as well.
Where Is Mark Harmon?
To the delight of fans of the 2003 comedy “Freaky Friday”, it has been announced that Mark Harmon will be reprising his role in the upcoming sequel, titled “Freaky Friday 2”. Originally playing Ryan, who eventually marries Jamie Lee Curtis’ character Tess in the original film, there are mixed feelings surrounding the project as it moves forward. Interestingly, Harmon is currently involved with “NCIS: Origins”, where he serves as a narrator and executive producer. This isn’t his first time taking on a production role, as he has previously worked as a producer and executive producer for the original NCIS and another CBS project back in 2008.
Where Is Sasha Alexander?
2023 saw Sasha Alexander gracing several prominent series, including ‘Law & Order’, where she embodied Kristin Bartell, a member of Congress. Additionally, Alexander made a single-episode appearance on ‘The Morning Show’ as Salma. Notably, prior to the launch of the NCIS: Tony & Ziva spinoff, Alexander featured on the podcast “Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch”. Some enthusiasts anticipate she might make an appearance or even direct an episode for this upcoming series, possibly in tribute to her past work with ‘NCIS’.
Where Is Michael Weatherly?
Following his departure from the show in 2016, Michael Weatherly reappeared on NCIS in a special tribute episode for David McCallum in February 2024. Not long after this cameo, it was announced that he would return to the NCIS franchise with a new series titled NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo currently co-host the “Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch” podcast, where they discuss behind-the-scenes stories and the show’s mythology. The latest episode of this weekly podcast was released on November 12, 2024, with some speculation about the future of the show in light of the upcoming NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
Where Is Pauley Perrette?
Since her departure from her acting roles in 2018, Pauley Perrette hasn’t been as busy with acting gigs compared to some of her fellow cast members. After leaving NCIS, there were issues between Perrette and Mark Harmon which led to his dog biting a crew member on set. Following this incident, she made a brief appearance on CBS show Broke, but it only ran for one season. Prior to that, Pauley directed and produced the documentary Citizen Lane in 2013 and has been an active advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and other social causes. She suffered a stroke in 2021 and announced it to the public a year later, but since then she has reportedly been in good health.
Where Is David McCallum?
McCallum played the beloved character Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard for 20 seasons, but tragically, David McCallum passed away in 2023. His journey began in 1946 at the tender age of 13, with voice work on BBC radio. His television career took off in 1953, and he achieved great fame portraying Illya Kuryakin in The Great Escape (1963) and throughout the The Man From U.N.C.L.E franchise.
Apart from various video game roles, McCallum could also be found in different titles, one being an NCIS-themed game launched in 2011 where he voiced both the narrator and his character “Ducky.” His career maintained a steady pace until his passing on September 25, 2023. In February 2024, a heartfelt tribute episode of NCIS was unveiled in honor of McCallum, which resonated positively with viewers.
Where is Sean Murray?
Initially introduced in eight episodes of the first season of NCIS as a temporary character named Special Agent Timothy “Tim” McGee, Sean Murray eventually became a permanent cast member starting from subsequent seasons. Interestingly, Murray has been with the series for more than two decades now, earning the title of longest-serving actor on the show. Currently, Murray holds the record for being the most senior actor in the series. NCIS remains the primary focus of his acting career, with occasional guest roles on other TV shows, but his portrayal of Timothy “Tim” McGee stands out as his most significant role to date.
Where is Brian Dietzen?
Initially, Brian Dietzen joined the cast in season 1, episode 21, playing Dr. Jimmy Palmer, an assistant to Dr. Ducky Mallard. Over time, Dietzen’s role evolved from a guest star into a regular character starting in season 10. As the series progressed, he became increasingly involved, even co-writing episodes from season 19 onwards. Together with Sean Murray, Dietzen has been a mainstay of the show for more than two decades. Lately, Dietzen has made appearances in both NCIS: Hawai’i and NCIS: New Orleans, further strengthening his ties to the NCIS franchise.
Where is Cote de Pablo?
From the very beginning of my fandom, I’ve always cherished Cote de Pablo’s character, Ziva David, who didn’t join NCIS until season 3 but quickly became an indispensable part of the team. The only time she was notably absent was during a brief break between seasons 11 and 17. Now, it’s with great excitement that I look forward to Cote de Pablo returning as Ziva David in the upcoming NCIS: Tony and Ziva. Interestingly, she has co-hosted the “Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch” podcast, but outside of her iconic role on NCIS, her career has primarily consisted of guest appearances on various TV shows and supporting roles in films.
Where Is the NCIS Series at the Moment?
The incredibly successful series has kept building on its popularity throughout the years, getting renewed for a 22nd season. At this stage, it also boasts several offshoots. The first of these offshoots was NCIS: Los Angeles, which aired from 2009 to 2023 and maintained a similar tone. Following that was NCIS: New Orleans, which broadcasted from 2014 to 2021. Then came NCIS: Hawai’i, which ran from 2021 to 2024.
Moving Southbound, the TV series NCIS: Sydney persists in revolving around U.S. military personnel. The debut of NCIS: Origins took place in November 2024 and has been thriving, while the anticipated spin-off, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, focusing on Ziva and Tony’s reunion following her apparent demise, is slated for release this year. As for where to catch up with all the action, NCIS can be streamed on Paramount+, with the forthcoming NCIS: Tony & Ziva also destined for the streaming platform.
