As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of dance and theater, I can’t help but feel the excitement coursing through my veins as I write about this upcoming event. The resurrection of Alvin Ailey’s iconic masterpiece, “Revelations,” is not just a performance, but a journey back in time to the soul of Black spirituality and gospel.
In 1958, Alvin Ailey’s groundbreaking work “Revelations” made its debut, just a few years after he moved to New York. This was one of many significant pieces created by this influential artist and choreographer, leaving an indelible impact on the dance world. To tour the country with it, Ailey reduced the original 16 segments into three, and since then, it has remained concise. Although it’s been six decades since Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater last presented the original production, the essence of “Revelations” will once again grace the stage.
In the upcoming month, Matthew Rushing will revive a complete rendition of Ailey’s iconic piece titled “Sacred Songs” at the Whitney Museum‘s third-floor theater. This performance delves into the heart of Black spirituality and gospel, echoing Ailey’s original vision through dance and emotion. The show includes some of the spirituals from the initial version of “Revelations“, as well as modern adaptations. Rushing collaborated with the company’s music director Du’Bois A’Keen to reinterpret all the songs across various genres grounded in Black culture, such as rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, R&B, and hip hop.
In 1992, Rushing began his journey with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a dancer. Regrettably, he never had the chance to meet the founder following his passing in 1989. However, in his capacity as interim artistic director at the company, he pays tribute to Ailey’s visionary leadership and creative influence. He brings together a group of professional dancers and regular attendees from Ailey Extension’s dance classes, creating a vibrant community that embodies the essence of dance. As he reflects on this unique experience, he remarks, “I believe it’s unprecedented, and it’s a stunning representation of what our organization represents.
The musical group Sacred Songs is set to perform in the series of shows for Edges of Ailey, a groundbreaking retrospective currently being showcased at the Whitney Museum. This unprecedented exhibition offers an extensive collection of uncommon archives, such as interviews, programs, short stories, letters, poems, choreographic notebooks, and performance recordings. Featuring works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Rashid Johnson, and Kara Walker, the exhibition spans artworks from more than 80 artists, categorized under various themes that significantly impacted Ailey’s creative and personal journey.
Ailey’s presence is felt in every corner of the gallery, glowing through his early influences to contemporary proteges. As his iconic dance group continues to bloom, the retrospective celebrates the profound and poetic work of one of the most visionary choreographers of the 20th century.
Tickets for the show “Sacred Songs” can be purchased on the New York City Center’s website from December 4, 2024, up until January 5, 2025, which is Alvin Ailey’s birthday. The special exhibition, titled “Edges of Ailey“, is currently running at the Whitney Museum and will continue until February 9, 2025.
