I must admit, I was absolutely smitten by the enchanting performance of the Ship during Group A’s debut on The Masked Singer Season 12! Her lively rendition of “Pompeii” by Bastille had me dancing along in my chair, even if she did give us a few splinters with her energetic performance.
Warning: The following story reveals the identity of the celebrity who was unveiled on the September 25 episode of ‘The Masked Singer’ in its 12th season. If you want to watch the episodes and haven’t had a chance yet, they can be streamed the day after with a Hulu subscription.
The show “The Masked Singer” is back in the 2024 TV lineup for Season 12, following its victory with Vanessa Hudgens (previously known as Goldfish) in Season 11. Five celebrities dressed up for the season opener as Group A, and unfortunately, one of them was eliminated already. Let’s delve into the hints to predict which well-known personalities are concealed behind the remaining four extravagant props. Below, we’ll examine all the clues and provide our top guesses for Group A.
During this competition, there is an Ambassador for each participant, who not only participated in The Masked Singer previously but also shares a strong bond with the celebrity they present. Each Ambassador provided a hint to their competitor. So, let’s delve deeper into it!
Buffalo
As a gamer, I couldn’t believe my eyes when the buffalo turned out to be a trio of singers! Dressed in red vests, boots, and cowboy hats, they sure did bring the western vibe alive. Their energy was infectious as they danced around while the panelists analyzed the clues. It seemed like they were enjoying every moment of it. The celebration that followed their performance was well-earned, it was truly impressive!
- Song: “[I Just] Died in Your Arms” by Cutting Crew
- Ambassador/Gift: Nick Lachey gave him a golden crown with fleur-de-lis embellishments.
- Clues: Raised in “poor grasslands”; kneeling football player on bus stop sign; Betty White, Vanna White and a blank third spot; film reel; Walk of Fame; starred in two of the biggest sitcoms of all time.
- Panel’s guesses: B2K/Omarion (Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg), Earth, Wind & Fire (Rita Ora), Jonas Brothers or 98 Degrees (Robin Thicke).
Our Best Guess
It seems to me that Jenny could be correct about B2K, but the hint “Betty and Vanna” has left me puzzled. Could it be possible that one or even more of them have a surname ending in ‘White’?
To be frank, I’m still a bit puzzled by Buffalo seemingly referring to three individuals, and I’m unsure if the clues pertain to all three, perhaps indicating triplet siblings or brothers, or if they’re intended for him specifically, with the other two being linked in some other manner.
Woodpecker
Over the course of its run, The Masked Singer has showcased some stunning bird-themed costumes, and the Woodpecker is no exception. This mystery figure boasted vibrant red and black plumage, and despite being relatively short, was made to appear taller with an elongated neck. The performer also sported a rather formidable bill.
- Song: “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus
- Ambassador/Gift: Jenifer Lewis gave her a World Record.
- Clues: A mogul; friends with Beyoncé; red tape with the word “NEXT” on it; framed photo of the word “Family” on a gated entrance; striving to be the youngest billionaire; SAT test sheet.
- Panel’s guesses: Willow Smith (Ken Jeong), Cardi B. or Halle Bailey (Rita), Keke Palmer or “someone in the JoJo Siwa world” (Robin).
Our Best Guess
It’s quite plausible that Ken Jeong is correct about Willow Smith, given the “Family” hint. At just 9 years old, she joined Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, potentially providing connections to Beyoncé. Moreover, Jenifer Lewis mentioned something about “making Auntie Jen proud,” which may allude to her character as Aunt Helen on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
However, the “youngest billionaire” thing is throwing me, because that would make all of the panel’s guesses too old. Thinking about which young celebs know Beyoncé, my mind is going to her and Jay-Z’s 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter. That also fits with the “Family” connection, and Blue Ivy does hold two Guinness World Records.
Showbird
It’s strange to have two birds in one group, but I guess they DO flock together. The Showbird was all about shaking her bright tail feathers, and showed off a voice as vibrant as her costume.
- Song: “Just Fine” by Mary J. Blige
- Ambassador/Gift: Joel McHale gave her popcorn.
- Clues: Three microphones; was a tomboy growing up and self-described nerd; Advanced Singing 401 textbook; golden gavel; appeared in some of the biggest blockbusters of all time.
- Panel’s guesses: Jennifer Hudson (Ken), Taraji P. Henson (Rita), Kerry Washington (Robin).
Our Best Guess
I’m quite pleased with this choice. To me, the voiceover by Showbird seemed remarkably similar to Yvette Nicole Brown during her clue segment. Given that she and Joel McHale have a shared history from their time on “Community,” it makes sense why they might include a textbook in the clues. Additionally, the gavel could be referencing Brown’s role as Judge Harper on “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” And let’s not forget that she was part of one of the most successful films ever, “Avengers: Endgame.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I’ve got a hunch about someone who’s hiding in plain sight! This actress, who’s known for her love of shows like Star Wars and The Walking Dead, even went as far as calling herself a “nerd.” And guess what? Lego has popped up in some hints, which is interesting given that she’s lent her voice to several Lego movies for Marvel, DC, and Star Wars. If my intuition doesn’t fail me, it seems Ken Jeong missed the chance to recognize his co-star from Community!
Ship
Among all costumes from Group A of “The Masked Singer”, this one was my most preferred, as who wouldn’t be captivated by a character embodying a living inanimate object? The Ship’s performance was far from dull; it seemed to leave audience members with the sensation of splinters, making the performance anything but uninteresting.
- Song: “Pompeii” by Bastille
- Ambassador/Gift: Jewel gave her a sparkling silver cowboy hat, and referenced working together many years prior.
- Clues: Silver chalice; career set sail rapidly; she’s had massive hits; white toy plane with a clock on the front set at 11:36; Wanted poster with $15,000 reward; small old-fashioned TV set with rabbit ears that she moved into the shape of an X.
- Panel’s guesses: Cyndi Lauper (Rita), Joan Osborne (Jenny), Enya or Sarah McLachlan (Robin).
Our Best Guess
Although the voice has a hint of Annie Lennox, the clues don’t align quite as perfectly as they might if Paula Cole were concealed beneath that attire.
Cole and Jewel were not just popular artists who gained fame in the 1990s, but they also performed as headliners at the first ever Lilith Fair. The hint from TV might be pointing towards her famous single “I Don’t Want to Wait,” which was used as the theme for Dawson’s Creek. Their 2024 single “Flying Home” could explain the plane, and the silver cowboy hat seems to directly reference another one of her massive hits, “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?
Eliminated Celebrities
- The Leaf Sheep — which yes, is apparently a real thing — was unmasked to reveal it was none other than Denver Broncos legend John Elway. The two-time Super Bowl champ delivered a rousing performance Tim McGraw’s “I Like It, I Love It,” though perhaps one that didn’t exactly remained on key.
To start off, Group A delivered a remarkable debut of “The Masked Singer” Season 12. I’m eager to catch more performances from the Ships, Woodpecker, Songbird, and Buffalos in the upcoming weeks. The battle for stardom will carry on at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 2nd, airing on Fox.
