Whoopi Goldberg Get Honest About Losing Maggie Smith In The Midst Of Developing Sister Act 3

As a long-time fan of the Sister Act franchise, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness knowing that Maggie Smith won’t be reprising her role as Mother Superior in the upcoming third movie. Her performance was nothing short of iconic, and her chemistry with Whoopi Goldberg was truly magical. It’s like losing a dear friend all over again.

Since 2018 when it was revealed that a third Sister Act film would air on Disney+, production has been in progress. Regrettably, the forthcoming movie will not feature the late Maggie Smith, who was iconic for her role as Mother Superior in the earlier installments. Following the passing of this renowned actress at 89 years old in September, the lead star, Whoopi Goldberg, discussed the impact of Smith’s absence during the making of the upcoming Disney production.

As a devoted fan, I’d say one of Maggie Smith’s standout performances was in “Sister Act.” She breathed life into the stern yet loving Mother Superior of St. Katherine’s Convent. At first, she and the disguised lounge singer Delores Van Cartier didn’t see eye to eye, but as the story unfolded, they formed an unexpected bond that carried over to “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

Regrettably, following Smith’s passing, we won’t have the opportunity to witness her repeat her iconic character again. On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Delores (Whoopi Goldberg) discussed the impact of the Harry Potter actress on the potential production of Sister Act 3.

Due to the recent departure of Maggie Smith, we find ourselves needing to adapt a bit. Rest assured, we’ll manage and move forward, albeit with a slight change in our plans.

It’s truly disappointing that Maggie Smith won’t be returning as Mother Superior in the third movie, as her character was such a delight. I’m curious to know if they’ll choose to recast the role or if they’ll have Mother Superior pass away instead. The dynamic between Mother Superior and Delores was something special, and it would have been fantastic to see their friendship develop further in the third installment. That memorable reunion scene in “Sister Act 2” where Mother Superior and Delores embraced in the convent is still vivid in my mind. Her absence will surely be noticeable, as her chemistry with Goldberg added a touch of warmth and humor to one of the most entertaining ’90s comedies.

In the making process of “Sister Act 3”, it was initially intended that Whoopi Goldberg would bring Maggie Smith back into the convent’s habit. The actress from “The Color Purple” reached out emotionally to Maggie Smith, expressing her desire not to proceed with a third film without her. Reading this heartfelt message following Maggie Smith’s passing brings immense sadness, as the movie will now have to move forward without the iconic actress gracing its presence. Among numerous touching tributes paid to Smith, Whoopi Goldberg expressed her gratitude for having worked alongside such an extraordinary talent. It is certain that she will be deeply missed by the “Sister Act” cast and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

It might take some adaptation for Whoopi Goldberg and the team behind Sister Act 3 to proceed without Maggie Smith. Yet, with a robust cast and crew, I’m optimistic they will do justice to her legacy by creating a worthy sequel that would make the esteemed triple crown acting talent proud. For now, fans can revisit the chemistry between Smith and Goldberg in the first two Sister Act movies on their Disney+ subscription until more details about Sister Act 3’s release date are announced.
