As a long-time gamer and avid fan of superhero stories, I’ve seen my fair share of actors bring iconic characters to life on both the big and small screens. But none have left as lasting an impression on me as Antony Starr‘s portrayal of Homelander in “The Boys.” This series has been a breath of fresh air in the saturated superhero genre, offering a unique take on the concept with its raw, unapologetic approach to the subject matter.
Amidst the Marvel Cinamic Universe’s dominance of pop culture and DC’s film and TV world making frequent news, “The Boys” has flourished. This Amazon Prime Video series, a satirical take on superheroes, has produced several seasons and spin-offs, achieving both critical and commercial acclaim. With the upcoming release of Season 5, “The Boys” will come to an end. Some cast members may move on to other comic book-inspired projects. However, Homelander actor Antony Starr expresses no interest in portraying another superpowered character.
Star, among his “Boys” cast members, had an interview with “Happy Sad Confused.” He revealed that playing another superhero character, particularly Booster Gold from DC, isn’t appealing to him. The reason being, he is getting older and finds it hard to engage in action-packed roles anymore. Instead, he prefers jobs where he just needs to sit and command those capable of handling the action. In a joking manner, Star expressed his desire to have a desk job on a “CSI” show, yelling “You shouldn’t have done that! Try again!” at others.
In a different conversation, Starr gave some clues about the types of parts audiences could expect from him in the future.
What does Starr’s acting future hold?
As a huge fan of “The Boys,” I was initially skeptical when Antony Starr was cast as Homelander. But throughout the series, he’s completely won me over. His portrayal of the manipulative and erratic leader of The Seven is spot-on, showing us an insecure egotist with a fiery temper and no capacity for empathy. It’s both chilling and captivating to watch him bring this complex villain to life. Antony Starr has proven himself to be the ideal actor for this role, and I can’t wait to see what other compelling villain performances he brings to the table in the future.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Starr expressed some thoughts about his acting prospects. Although he’s undecided about what lies ahead for his career, he’s drawn to portraying villainous characters. “I don’t know, man. I don’t know what I’m searching for anymore,” he admitted when asked if he was seeking a more compassionate character to counterbalance Homelander’s wickedness. Based on this statement, it’s possible that Starr may assume the role of another antagonist similar to Homelander in future projects, minus the demanding physical aspects of a superhero role.
If Antony Starr only portrays Homelander in superhero projects, it’s clear he made an excellent choice. He has breathed life into the character in a way no other actor has, pushing himself to even depict a disturbing Homelander scene that left him deeply disturbed. As a result, “The Boys” has gained immense popularity worldwide.
