As a lifelong fan of professional wrestling, I’ve always been captivated by the larger-than-life characters and gripping storylines that have unfolded within the squared circle. However, my admiration for the WWE and its iconic figures has never blinded me from recognizing the darker side of the industry. The upcoming documentary on Vince McMahon, Mr. McMahon, promises to shed light on both aspects of his life – the meteoric rise of a visionary entrepreneur and the allegations that have tarnished his reputation.
A six-episode Netflix series titled “Mr. McMahon” is scheduled for release on September 25, delving into the life story of the former head of WWE, Vince McMahon, including the claims of sexual misconduct against him. The documentary traces his journey from acquiring the promotion initially known as WWF from his father, through to his resignation when these allegations surfaced. Notably, he relinquished control of the company following its merger with UFC to form TKO Group, where he now holds the position of executive chairman.
In the lawsuit filed by Janel Grant, a former WWE employee, both McMahon and ex-WWE executive John Laurinaitis are implicated. However, as per her lawyer Ann Callis, Grant will not be providing any insights in the documentary due to her desire to share her own narrative at a later time, as reported by The Wrap. This means that her account won’t appear in the documentary itself.
Callis stated that although Janel wasn’t involved in the Netflix documentary, he hopes it exposes the reprehensible acts of McMahon, often happening on WWE grounds, and accurately depicts the truth about his abusive and exploitative conduct.
Prior to the airing of the documentary, Callis expressed optimism that an indictment might be issued against McMahon. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York is currently conducting an inquiry, causing Callis to hold off on her own investigation until the results are known.
What Is Mr. McMahon About?
The documentary will delve into the initial phases of the company, starting from when it was handed over to him, and detail his actions that propelled it to success. After four years of conducting interviews with McMahon, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, among others, director Chris Smith revealed that he had to weave in the fresh accusations into the narrative.
Over the course of four years, I’ve witnessed the narrative take unexpected and startling turns, ultimately leading to some incredibly challenging revelations. The end result is a compelling documentary that we feel paints a profound and multifaceted picture of this individual, as well as the intricate legacy he has left us.
The Netflix series features over 200 conversations with McMahon, including his relatives, journalists, business partners, and fellow wrestlers. However, since these interviews were conducted prior to his resignation from the WWE, you won’t find McMahon directly addressing any of the accusations against him in this series.
Mr. McMahon
