Just one short month until Wicked is available on streaming.
Previously understood that the critically acclaimed movie from Universal Pictures, which received an Oscar nomination, was destined for streaming on NBCUniversal’s platform, Peacock, following its run in cinemas. Now, the blockbuster film has confirmed its release date on the streaming service: March 21st.
The film can be bought right now from digital services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, where it’s classified as a high-tier video-on-demand option.
Alongside the movie, fans will also receive a variety of extra features such as:
1. A sing-along version of the musical Wicked.
2. The NBC special, Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked.
3. An exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary called “Making Wicked.”
4. Two featurettes and a couple of podcast episodes featuring director Jon M. Chu and cinematographer Alice Brooks.
5. Several cut and extended scenes from the film.
Wicked had a theatrical run beginning on Christmas Day last year.
The movie directed by Chu, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, received 10 Oscar nominations, including one for best picture. In the film adaptation of Wicked, both its Oz witches received acting nominations. Specifically, Erivo was nominated for lead actress in a leading role as Elphaba, while Grande was recognized in the supporting actress category for her portrayal of Glinda. As anticipated, the movie was also nominated across several technical categories. Nominations were given for production design, sound, visual effects, costume design, editing, and hair and makeup styling for Wicked. However, Chu himself did not receive a nomination.
The movie “Wicked” reveals an unheard tale about the witches from Oz. This film and its upcoming sequel “Wicked: Part Two,” slated for release in November 2025, are derived from a musical that debuted in 2003, which was itself adapted from Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel. Winnie Holzman, the author of the stage play, collaborated with Dana Fox to write the screenplay for Chu’s movie. Stephen Schwartz, a multiple Academy Award winner for music and lyrics, revisited the show to adapt it for the big screen. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originally played Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway, made appearances in the film.
