As a longtime fan of Dexter, I must say that the recent announcements about the cast for the upcoming series, Dexter: Original Sin, have me absolutely thrilled! With the talented James Martinez stepping into the shoes of Angel Batista and Alex Shimizu taking on Vince Masuka’s eccentric character, it feels like we are getting a fresh take on these beloved characters.
Enthusiasts of the Showtime drama Dexter were thrilled when they learned about the upcoming prequel series, set to debut by the end of 2024. This new series focuses on the early years of a younger Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Patrick Gibson. Given that Michael C. Hall played the character in the original series, it appears unlikely that he will be featured in this upcoming production.
It was revealed at San Diego ComicCon that he will reprise his role in another spin-off titled “Dexter: Resurrection“, contrary to the presumption that he was killed off in “Dexter: New Blood“. This has sparked curiosity among fans about Hall’s potential participation in “Dexter: Original Sin“. Fortunately, it has been confirmed that he will be a part of the show in a particularly relevant role.
Michael C. Hall Will Have a Role (Sort Of)
In a fresh retelling, “Dexter: Original Sin” will delve into the backstory of how Dexter Morgan transformed into a covert serial killer, enforcing justice in his own unique way. For those well-versed with the original series, they may recall that Dexter’s father, Harry (portrayed by James Remar), uncovered Dexter’s violent tendencies towards animals and recognized there was a deep issue at hand. From this point, he guided Dexter in establishing The Code as a means to control his actions.
In the new adaptation of Dexter, Patrick Gibson portrays the younger version of the character, while Michael C. Hall lends his voice for the inner thoughts, similar to how he did in the original series. Given the significant role that Dexter’s internal monologue played in the initial series, having Hall voice his younger self seems appropriate. This means that although Hall won’t physically appear on screen, he will still be a crucial part of the show. In the trailer, fans can already hear Hall narrating, with him saying, “They say it takes a village to raise a killer.
In the TV series “Dexter”, Michael C. Hall is often referred to as the “inner voice” of the character. On IMDb, he’s listed as the “Narrator”. This means that his presence will add a sense of familiarity, as Dexter’s inner voice was almost like a separate character in its own right. The Dexter viewers interacted with on the show was different from the person fans heard when they got insights into Dexter’s true thoughts. With Hall reprising his role, it will further reinforce the idea that the young man on screen is a younger version of the beloved character.
What Fans Expect to See in the Show
The storyline kicks off with Dexter embarking on his forensics apprenticeship at Miami Metro PD. During this time, he encounters the younger incarnations of several characters featured in the initial series. In Dexter: Original Sin, the narrative primarily revolves around Dexter Morgan. However, viewers anticipate seeing a lot of Harry and gaining insights into his perspective as a detective. Harry often became frustrated with work-related situations such as guilty individuals escaping justice due to technicalities or insufficient evidence. Upon learning about his son’s actions and understanding their implications for the future, he devised a clever strategy to channel Dexter’s murderous instincts, which Dexter referred to as his Dark Passenger.
Eventually, the harsh truth of the situation proved overwhelming for Harry, particularly when he observed Dexter’s casual approach towards his ritualistic actions, even seeming to find pleasure in them. As fans of Dexter know, Harry ultimately took his own life due to his inability to cope with his son’s actions and his complicity in them. The psychological turmoil that Harry experienced is likely to be a significant aspect of the upcoming show, offering viewers an unprecedented look into the character who was previously depicted only in flashbacks or as Dexter’s visions.
Who Will Star in Dexter: Original Sin?
Featuring Gibson alongside his notable roles in shows like “The Tudors”, “The OA”, “Shadow and Bone”, and “Tolkien”, as well as the series “Dexter: Original Sin”, boasts an impressive ensemble of actors.
- Christian Slater, a veteran actor who has been in the business since the ‘80s, will play Harry. Some of Slater’s most defining roles include Heathers, Young Guns II, and True Romance. His most notable recent role was as an inner voice of sorts in the USA Network series Mr. Robot.
- A young version of Dexter’s sister Debra, originally played by Jennifer Carpenter, will be played by Molly Brown, a relative newcomer whose first TV series role was in 2012. She may be most recognizable as Leslie in the series Evil. Some may recall her as Liz Prince, daughter of Mike Prince, in Billions as well.
- Maria LaGuerta, who was portrayed by Luna Lauren Velez in the original, will be played by Christina Milian here. Starting her career as a singer, Milian has starred in movies like Love Don’t Cost a Thing, Bring It On: Fight to the Finish, and the short-lived sitcom Grandfathered. Angel Batista, originally played by David Zayas, will be played by James Martinez. Fans will recognize Martinez from House of Cards, One Day at a Time, and Love, Victor.
- Vince Masuka, Dexter’s eccentric colleague who was played by C.S. Lee, will be played by Alex Shimizu. His most notable role was as Tadashi Ito in The Blacklist, but Shimizu has had small roles in shows like Person of Interest, Community, and S.W.A.T.
- Sarah Michelle Gellar, best known as the title character in the iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, plays a new character named Tanya Martin, who will be Dexter’s immediate boss throughout his internship.
- One of the latest to join the cast is Grey’s Anatomy’s Patrick Dempsey playing Captain Aaron Spencer, also a new character. Another new character will be Harry’s partner and friend Bobby Watt, played by Reno Wilson. Some of Wilson’s most memorable roles include in Mike & Molly, Good Girls, and as the voice of several characters in Transformers movies, including Frenzy, Mudflap, and Brains.
In the world of “Dexter,” there’s one character I find conspicuously absent – James Doakes, portrayed by Erik King. Doakes was more than just a supporting actor; he was one of the first characters close to Dexter who began to suspect something wasn’t quite right. Although he was a dedicated cop pursuing a notorious killer, from a unique perspective within the show, he functioned as a primary antagonist, an unrelenting villain who doggedly followed Dexter’s trail. If the series were to be revived for another season, it’s plausible that Doakes, having joined Miami Metro later, could reappear.
When and Where Will Dexter: Original Sin Start Streaming?
Just like the initial series that ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013, Dexter: Original Sin is set to premiere on Showtime. However, given the current dominance of streaming platforms, it will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ in addition to Showtime.
The show is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ with a simultaneous release on Showtime starting Friday, 13th December 2024, perfect for the upcoming holiday season. The inaugural episode will be made available on Showtime’s linear network to its subscribers on Sunday, 15th December 2024. The first season will consist of 10 episodes.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the debut of this upcoming series and a fresh take on the Dexter universe, which has evolved into a franchise. While Dexter: New Blood stirred up mixed feelings with its approach to rectifying the criticisms of the final season of the original Dexter series, Dexter: Original Sin presents an opportunity to rejuvenate one of television’s most cherished serial killer characters.
Watch Dexter on Paramount+. The original series, Dexter: Original Sin, will be broadcast on Showtime and also streamed on Paramount+ in conjunction with Showtime.
