With Labor Day, Is Deadpool & Wolverine the Biggest Movie of 2024?

Well, I’ve seen my fair share of blockbusters in my day, and let me tell you, the latest Marvel spectacle, Deadpool & Wolverine, certainly doesn’t disappoint! With a domestic gross surpassing the $600-million mark and joining an elite club of films that have achieved such success, it’s clear that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have delivered another box office smash.

Over the Labor Day weekend, Deadpool and Wolverine continue to conquer the box office with their first Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure surpassing $600 million in domestic earnings! As of today, the latest Deadpool film has earned a whopping $599,525,117.00 (according to The Numbers).

Highest-Grossing MCU Films of All Time (Domestic)

  1. Avengers: Endgame ($858.3 million)
  2. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.8 million)
  3. Black Panther ($700.1 million)
  4. Avengers: Infinity War ($678.8 million)
  5. The Avengers ($623.4 million)
  6. Deadpool & Wolverine ($600+ million)

The combined earnings of Deadpool and Wolverine, totaling $600 million, places the Marvel Cinematic Universe film among an exclusive group, as it is now one of only 16 movies ever in U.S. history to reach this financial peak. At the top of the list remains Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens with a staggering $936.7 million, while Incredibles 2 ($609 million) narrowly beats out the profanely witty Mutant in reaching this milestone. However, it’s worth noting that even with its tremendous success, Deadpool and Wolverine do not hold the title of the summer blockbuster of the year 2024.

Inside Out 2 Defeats Deadpool & Wolverine for Summer’s Top Film

Over the summer, Deadpool and Wolverine’s film surpassed all other R-rated movies in terms of box office earnings, both domestically and internationally. Therefore, it appears that the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe production has a knack for shattering box office records. Nevertheless, the teamwork between Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy in their film doesn’t hold the crown for the 2024 summer movie season. Instead, that title belongs to Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

Summer 2024 Top-Grossing Films (Domestic)

  1. Inside Out 2 ($650 million)
  2. Deadpool & Wolverine ($600+ million)
  3. Despicable Me 4 ($354.1 million)
  4. Twisters ($258 million)
  5. Bad Boys: Ride or Die ($194 million)

During the lackluster summer season of 2024, which ended on Labor Day weekend, only two films – Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, each grossing over $1 billion worldwide, managed to break into the billion-dollar club. Interestingly, Despicable Me 4 almost made it with a global earnings of $913.8 million, just shy of joining this elite group.

This summer’s gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool,” and “Wolverine” respectively, and “Despicable Me 4” as well. It is a remarkable accomplishment for these movies to have grossed over $1 billion each, considering the dismal 2024 summer movie season, which is likely to be remembered as one of the poorest financially outside of the years affected by the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022).

2024’s remaining months may offer a compensation for the lackluster releases of the past three, including “The Fall Guy.” Exciting titles such as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Wicked,” “Moana 2,” “Joker: Folie à Deux,” “Gladiator II,” and “Venom: The Last Dance” are slated to appear during the upcoming fall and holiday seasons.

As a die-hard film fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The long-anticipated “Beetlejuice” sequel is officially taking center stage in cinemas nationwide, starting from September 6, just a few weeks after the grand finale of the 2024 summer movie season. Can’t wait to shout “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” again on the big screen!
