“Wrangler Archives” Book by Japanese Collector Aims to Preserve Denim History

Rikiya Kanamaru, proprietor of the vintage store Gold Gate, and an aficionado of Wrangler apparel, has assembled his extensive 200-piece archive of Wrangler clothing into a groundbreaking book that delves into the rich history of this iconic American denim company.

In a statement to Fashion Snap, Kanamaru expressed that his recent publication marks the beginning of his contributions to Wrangler. Despite his longtime enthusiasm, there are still Wrangler editions he’s yet to come across. To him, it feels like an unfinished book. He is eagerly awaiting insights from fellow enthusiasts who have encountered this book.

Although Wrangler as a separate brand was established under Blue Bell in 1947, its parent company had already been around since 1897. Since the post-forties era, Wrangler has been known for producing workwear and casual styles with a Western touch, best represented by their iconic Cowboy fit jeans. Interestingly, these jeans have experienced a modern revival. On Golden Gate’s site, Kanamaru notes that despite being one of America’s major denim brands, Wrangler produced fewer items compared to its competitors, resulting in a diverse product range that even collectors find hard to fully understand. Through his book, Kanamaru aims to preserve the brand’s historical archives for future generations.

Kanamaru’s “Wrangler Archives” comes in both a typical and restricted edition, each sporting a unique denim cover and metallic embellishments. The standard version is up for grabs on the Gold Gate webstore, while the limited edition can be bought by messaging Gold Gate via Instagram Direct Messages.

In the year 2023, Kanamaru had the opportunity to join a unique TOLQ capsule project, where they utilized three jackets from his personal collection as their inspiration points.
