As a longtime fan of the X-Men, I can’t help but feel a mix of disappointment and excitement as I read about Kevin Feige’s revelation regarding the reason behind the iconic superheroes’ black leather costumes in the early 2000s Fox movies.
Kevin Feige has clarified a long-held query regarding Marvel’s initial X-Men film, explaining the reason fans didn’t see the characters in their authentic comic costumes during the first outing. Contrastingly, the forthcoming Deadpool and Wolverine production is set to rectify this issue by letting Hugh Jackman don the iconic yellow and blue Wolverine suit for the very first time on screen. It appears that Jackman’s introduction in black leather was influenced by a widely-acclaimed Keanu Reeves film, which hit cinemas prior to X-Men’s launch in 2000.
During a talk at the pre-premiere event for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Feige explained why the X-Men’s costumes underwent a redesign. According to Feige, there was a belief back then that the massive success of “The Matrix” in 1999 warranted attempting to mimic its central characters’ appearance. As reported by Brandon Davis of ComicBook.com, Feige shared:
“The executives overseeing the production, aware of The Matrix’s success, ordered, ‘Dress them in black leather!'”
If Fox executives anticipated a favorable response from fans regarding the new appearance, they were disappointed. Though the film was generally appreciated and paved the way for numerous subsequent superhero movies, the significant departure from the X-Men’s comic book images and “X-Men: The Animated Series” caused controversy among viewers.
Marvel Studios Openly Mocks the Black Suits of Fox’s X-Men Movies
As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of the X-Men universe, I’m thrilled to see Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” At first, the initial trailer kept us guessing about his appearance in his iconic yellow and blue suit. But with several set leaks, the secret was out, and we couldn’t contain our excitement any longer. During the rest of the marketing campaign, the producers gave us plenty of glimpses of Jackman in all his glory – alas, without his mask, which he’ll don in the movie itself.
Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is expected to poke fun at Fox’s old movies in his own way. However, Marvel Studios’ animated series “X-Men ’97” has previously targeted the 2000 film. In an episode, Cable challenges Cyclops about his vivid costume and receives a terse response from him.
What did you expect? Black Leather?
The put-down references the banter between Cyclops and Wolverine in the 2000’s X-Men film, which poked fun at the vibrant costumes common in comics. Back then, producing a superhero in bright spandex was considered a way to invite mockery by Hollywood, thus explaining their absence in the initial X-Men movie adaptation.
Nowadays, fans are eager for their beloved superhero characters to don the same iconic costumes as depicted in comic books when they appear on screen. After the acclaimed revival of “X-Men ’97,” and Beast’s cameo in the post-credits scene of “The Marvels,” it appears that the upcoming introduction of X-Men in the MCU will feature a more traditional appearance for the characters, which is likely to delight many fans.
You can watch X-Men online through Disney+, but Deadpool and Wolverine will be showing in theaters starting July 26.
