As a fashion enthusiast with a keen eye for design and a soft spot for Japanese streetwear, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming Spring/Summer 2025 collection from XS.SML! Having spent countless hours poring over remnants of Rem Koolhaas’ architectural masterpieces, I can’t help but appreciate the subtle nod to his work in the label’s name and philosophy.
Having worked for N.HOOLYWOOD for a decade, founder Hikaru Watanabe has clearly honed his skills as a patternmaker, and it shows in every piece from XS.SML’s SS25 collection. The use of ruching to create a draped and crinkled effect is a stroke of genius, adding a touch of elegance without compromising on comfort.
The earthy palette of khaki, army green, taupe, ocher, black, and charcoal gray is perfect for those who want to make a statement while staying true to the minimalist aesthetic that defines Japanese streetwear. The mix of short-sleeve shirts, button-ups, wide-legged pants, shorts, and hooded windbreakers offers something for everyone, making it easy to build a versatile wardrobe that can take you from day to night effortlessly.
As I eagerly await release updates via XS.SML’s social media, I can’t help but wonder if the brand will continue to surprise us with innovative designs and thought-provoking philosophies. Maybe they’ll even drop a collection that’s inspired by my favorite architectural firm (wink wink). But for now, I’m content to bask in the glory of this amazing collection and add some XS.SML pieces to my own wardrobe.
And as I sit here admiring the pieces from the SS25 collection, I can’t help but laugh at the irony – a clothing label that’s all about size, yet its name is mysteriously missing a letter. I guess that’s just another way XS.SML keeps us on our toes!
For the Spring/Summer season of 2025, we’re excited to introduce XS.SML, a new clothing brand hailing from Japan. This label was brought to life by Hikaru Watanabe, an accomplished patternmaker with a decade-long tenure at N. HOOLYWOOD under his belt.
The brand, with its Instagram bio questioning the nature of beauty, “Is beauty just about appearances, or is there something deeper?”, leaves a sense of enigma regarding its purpose and beliefs. XS.SML seems to draw its name from sizing, yet delving into Watanabe’s personal Instagram, it appears that the book “S,M,L,XL” by Rem Koolhaas and Bruce Mau might also have influenced the brand’s title. This book is a comprehensive documentation of works by Koolhaas’ architectural firm, O.M.A., spanning 1,376 pages.
In another Instagram post from XS.SML, the brand shared a picture featuring four distinct clothing tags. Each tag was missing a specific letter from the brand’s name, suggesting that one of these labels could serve as both the brand identification and the size of the clothing item.
XS.SML’s SS25 collection boasts a variety of breezy and technical pieces, including short-sleeve shirts, button-ups, wide-leg trousers, shorts, and hooded windbreakers. The color scheme is earthy, with items available in shades of khaki, army green, taupe, ocher, as well as black and charcoal gray. A distinctive feature across the range is the incorporation of ruching, giving the garments a slightly gathered and wrinkled appearance.
Take a look at a selection of items from XS.SML’s SS25 collection displayed in the gallery up top. Stay tuned for news about the release through their social media platforms.
