As a devoted fan of “Breaking Bad,” I must say that season 3 was the most thought-provoking and contentious chapter in this gripping thriller series. It masterfully crafted an intricate plot, making characters who were once admired, increasingly difficult to root for. Yet, looking back, it all made sense. The previous seasons subtly foreshadowed the dark truth about the Yellowjacket survivors and how their ordeals would reshape their personalities and alter their worldview forever.
Initially, Shauna was a beloved and intricate character within the storyline. However, her portrayal shifted drastically in Season 3, revealing her to be the most ruthless and dangerous survivor. Despite being in two different timelines, Shauna’s ambition for power has consistently surfaced, making her an extremely compelling character in Yellowjackets. However, given the events of the Season 3 finale, she could potentially be the next adult casualty in this relentless tale.
Shauna Has Become a Major Yellowjackets Villain
Initially, Shauna in the early seasons of Yellowjackets was a compassionate character, mourning her lost friend and experiencing tragedy with the loss of her newborn. However, as the narrative unfolded, both in the current and flashback settings, Shauna has undergone a significant transformation. In the wilderness, she developed an obsession with power, using tactics like bullying, harassment, and threats against those who questioned her leadership. Moreover, she started to revel in her violent nature, finding pleasure in hurting, hunting, and killing others.
It’s possible that some viewers might assume that Shauna and the other Yellowjackets would have evolved since their rescue, adapting to societal norms once more. However, throughout the series, it’s been subtly hinted that Shauna has a history of violent behavior. In contemporary times, she has murdered her partner for perceived blackmail, deceived and manipulated her family without hesitation, and often jumps to conclusions about others based on limited information or dubious evidence.
Shauna isn’t portrayed negatively per se; instead, she serves as a compelling embodiment of the gritty, distorted aspects of this story, demonstrating how profound experiences like theirs can shape a person’s character. However, her brooding personality hints at a potentially ominous future ahead.
Yellowjackets Isn’t Afraid to Kill Off Main Characters
In a series such as Yellowjackets, viewers anticipate that characters may perish, even key figures like Jackie and Javi in the flashback period. Remarkably, those who survived the wilderness and returned home also faced death, with adult Travis passing away before we were properly introduced to him during Season 1. The writers demonstrated their audacity to eliminate beloved or crucial characters by offing Natalie at the end of Season 2, leaving many viewers heartbroken.
Season 3 kept audiences on edge by ending the lives of two key characters before the final episode. In Episode 4, titled “12 Angry Girls and a Tipsy Travis,” another emotional blow was dealt. Despite anticipation that Van might perish due to her cancer prognosis, it was an unexpected turn when Melissa fatally stabbed her in the penultimate episode of this season. Some viewers are contemplating abandoning the show following these tragic events, but they serve as a reminder that even popular characters can meet an untimely end.
Considering this, it’s quite likely that Shauna might meet her fate in the upcoming season. The show Yellowjackets has a knack for hinting at future events, such as Jackie being excluded from the group in Season 1 and Natalie making significant strides in dealing with her trauma in Season 2. As we move into Season 3, the storyline progressively paints Shauna in an unfavorable light, setting up viewers for her actions and the events that may transpire against her in Season 4.
Season 3 Built Up to an Internal Conflict
In the early stages of Yellowjackets Season 3, Shauna became increasingly convinced that someone was targeting her, after discovering a phone with a ringtone titled “Queen of Hearts,” experiencing brake failure in her van, being trapped in a freezer, and receiving a tape from their wilderness ordeal. While it was revealed that Melissa had sent Shauna the tape and Misty confessed to locking Shauna in the freezer as a form of punishment (following accusations of sabotage), these events were actually manifestations of Shauna’s paranoia, leading her to believe she had a stalker. This suggested to viewers that Shauna was not truly satisfied with her “peaceful” lifestyle and couldn’t fully escape the traumatic memories of her time in the wilderness.
In the course of events, it’s clear that grown-up Shauna has been gradually reclaiming her past position in the wilderness, asserting power and dominance in various situations. This drive to control her family and keep them in the dark unfortunately culminated in Callie killing Lottie, prompting Jeff to flee with his child, fearing for their safety from Shauna’s unsettling actions. As the season’s contemporary timeline comes to a close, even her friends have turned against her, finding it increasingly difficult to ignore her unpredictable behavior and holding her responsible for both Lottie’s death and Van’s, despite not directly causing these tragedies.
As the dwindling number of wilderness survivors grow increasingly wary, they find it harder to trust one another. Following Van’s demise at Melissa’s residence and their shared task of burying their late friend in an isolated grave, Tai and Misty have come to believe that Shauna is a potential hazard to their wellbeing. Consequently, a significant schism has formed among the surviving Yellowjacket group, casting further doubt on Shauna’s future as two shrewd and cunning women deem her too risky to trust.
Yellowjackets Season 4 Will Have to Be Exceptional to Pull It Off
In the world they once knew, adult Yellowjackets hadn’t resorted to killing each other, except for Lottie attempting a ritual sacrifice; however, this changed when Melissa took the life of Van. With Shauna now perceived as a danger to their existence by both Misty and Tai, the plot appears to be subtly suggesting a significant act of betrayal in Season 4. Alone and without family or allies, Shauna will likely become increasingly nervous and erratic, further heightening her potential threat. This could potentially push Misty and Tai to consider eliminating their former friend.
Given that the show has already begun to gain traction, taking such a risk with its plot could significantly impact its popularity. Regardless of any potential backlash, it is logical that Shauna’s actions in real life will be met with a stark contrast compared to her behavior during their childhood days in the wilderness. While Shauna’s character is marked by violence and self-centeredness, Tai and Misty are renowned for their resourcefulness and survival skills. When faced with danger, these women, scarred yet tenacious, will prioritize self-preservation, even if it means turning against one of their longest-standing allies.
In Season 4, there are numerous enigmas that the Yellowjackets will have to resolve. Yet, Season 3 managed to shed light on some significant queries, including revealing the identity of the Antler Queen in the initial episode. Given the turn of events this season, it’s entirely fitting by the end that Shauna assumed this role as the embodiment of the vicious and bloodthirsty cannibalistic gang. As we move forward into the present, Shauna may struggle to maintain control for as long as she did when she was a teenager due to these behaviors resurfacing.
