You Won’t Believe What’s Next for A-Train in The Boys Season 5

In its upcoming fifth and final season, “The Boys” has many character stories to conclude, including that of A-Train, portrayed by Jesse T. Usher. This popular superhero satire series on Prime Video, inspired by the graphic novels by Garth Ennis, has been marked by intense violence for four seasons, with Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) pursuing revenge against Homelander (Antony Starr) and other Vought Industries-controlled superheroes. A-Train, initially a villain, was instrumental in Hughie Campbell’s (Jack Quaid) desire to take down the superheroes, prompting him to join Butcher’s quest. However, as the series progressed over four seasons, viewers found themselves empathizing with A-Train, even witnessing Hughie’s forgiveness for his girlfriend’s death, Robin. Jesse T. Usher is hopeful that A-Train’s redemption arc will continue in the fifth season.

In an interview with The Direct at this year’s Saturn Awards, Usher mentioned that A-Train’s path to redemption was a development long anticipated. The actor explained that he had been aware since joining the show that A-Train would embark on a personal introspective journey, not due to any special insight or predictive abilities, but simply because the scriptwriters shared this plan with him.

When I embark on a performance and begin crafting a character, I receive a detailed summary, and the scriptwriters guide me, saying something like, “Here’s what this character has already experienced, his current state, and our thoughts about where we believe he might be headed.

Initially, I wasn’t prepared for A-Train‘s redemption arc to unfold as extensively as it did. I had assumed the character would be solely driven by money and fame, without a second thought for the people he’d harm along the way. To my surprise, his character development was more complex than I anticipated, revealing layers that I didn’t expect to see. In retrospect, I never foresaw it going this deep.

Jessie T. Usher Thought A-Train Would Die in ‘The Boys’ Season 2

Among the characters in the series, A-Train is one of the few who have made it to the last season. This fact even took Jessie T. Usher by surprise, as he had assumed that A-Train’s character, similar to DC’s Flash, would conclude his journey much earlier in Season 2. “I thought something like ‘This guy is going to meet his end in Season 2.’ I mean, where else could the story go for him?”

In the midst of filming the last season, Usher is preparing to bid farewell to A-Train on The Boys. He expressed that this moment has been emotional since the announcement of Season 5 because it symbolizes the start of goodbyes. Although the franchise is expanding with new spin-offs like Gen V and Vought Rising, Usher speculates that A-Train may not have seen his last screen time when The Boys concludes. He reasons that A-Train’s character could be beneficial in many ways across the universe, provided they choose to utilize him. As of now, a release date for Season 5 of The Boys remains unconfirmed.
