As a gamer who’s been on the virtual fashion runways and the physical ones too, I must say that Nicolas Yuthanan Chalmeau’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. His ability to seamlessly blend cultures and traditions, all while staying true to his roots, is a testament to the power of creativity.
Nicolas Yuthanan Chalmeau has quietly paved his own path in the fashion world over the past few years, blending the sartorial traditions of his French and Thai heritage with the craftsmanship of his new home in Tokyo. His label Sillage has become a cult favorite for its uniquely oversized garments that are crafted in small batches by master artisans across Japan. Clothing, however, is only one aspect of Yuthanan’s creative endeavors, emblematic of a new ceramic exhibition he will unveil at Tokyo’s COMPLEXBOOST gallery.
The collection, titled “Artifacts”, features repurposed ceramics from the Shōwa era that were found throughout Japan by the French-Thai designer Yuthanan. Drawing inspiration from a 1950s Sony advertising campaign where the company gave away branded tea sets to clients, Yuthanan collaborated with artist Noor Ul Aien to hand-paint each item with logos of contemporary Japanese businesses. This artistic process aims to breathe new life into these once-forgotten objects.
At the heart of every pottery piece, one can find a method to appreciate its charm anew, rather than purchasing new ceramic items, as stated by Yuthanan. This captivating exhibit is scheduled to run from September 7 to 9, 2024.
