As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for mythology and a soft spot for animated series, I must say the trailer for “Twilight of the Gods” has piqued my interest significantly! The gritty, action-packed visuals and the dark tone evoke memories of epic gaming adventures that took me on perilous quests through fantastical realms.
Following fleeting previews of “Twilight of the Gods” earlier in the year, Netflix is now providing a comprehensive sneak peek into the animated series directed by Zack Snyder.
In this retelling, the broadcaster has unveiled a comprehensive preview for the upcoming series, drawing inspiration from Norse legends. The storyline introduces an angry Thor (portrayed by Pilou Asbæk), distinctly different from his Marvel counterpart, and the ever-manipulative Loki. The narrative revolves around Sigrid, a valiant warrior character voiced by Sylvia Hoeks, who rescues King Leif (Stuart Martin) during combat. After their marriage, they face a horde of terror unleashed by Thor, which propels them and a band of crusaders on an extraordinary journey for vengeance, as suggested in the show’s synopsis. You can view the trailer here.
Deborah Snyder, partner and wife of director Zack Snyder, shared with The Hollywood Reporter during a Netflix event in June that the streaming platform gave them full creative control over their upcoming project, Twilight of the Gods: “We presented them an outline; they offered some suggestions but allowed us to run wild. They had no restrictions or boundaries.” She also mentioned that animation allows for greater artistic liberty, explaining, “In animation, you can explore concepts that are too expensive or difficult to achieve in live-action. You can style them however you envision, and there’s a wealth of creative opportunities.
The vocal ensemble of “Twilight of the Gods” features actors such as Rahul Kohli, Paterson Joseph, Jamie Clayton, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Kristofer Hivju, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, John Noble, and Peter Stormare.
In collaboration, Stone Quarry Animation, Zack Snyder, Jay Oliva, and Eric Carrasco jointly developed a series. Zack Snyder, along with his wife Deborah, and others including Wesley Coller and Oliva, serve as executive producers. This animation project hails from Xilam Animation. Zack Snyder directed both the opening and closing episodes, while Oliva, Carrasco, Andrew Tamandl, and additional directors Tim Divar and Dave Hartman contributed to the directing process as well.
Twilight of the Gods premieres Sept. 19.
