Zo Kravitz's Blink Twice Tops Digital Rentals After Underwhelming Release

As a cinephile who has seen my fair share of movies, both critically acclaimed and box office flops, I must say that Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, Blink Twice, is a breath of fresh air. This movie, despite its modest theatrical performance, has truly found its footing on PVOD and is proving to be a hidden gem.

There’s been much discussion about how swiftly some movies move from their cinema premiere to being accessible for home viewing through Premium Video On Demand (PVOD). While certain films are flourishing in cinemas, raking in plenty of box office revenue before transitioning to home viewing, others struggle at the box office. For these underperformers, the best alternative is to determine if the film can attract an audience among those who prefer to watch it within the comfort of their homes. In the case of “Blink Twice,” a film directed by actress Zoë Kravitz in her feature directorial debut, the movie initially performed modestly compared to its budget. However, it seems that it’s now finding an audience after its arrival on PVOD.

According to IndieWire, the movie “Blink Twice” started at the top spot in its initial week on Premium Video On Demand (PVOD). Initially, it ranked fourth during its premiere weekend in cinemas back in August with a revenue of $7 million. However, when it comes to position, its PVOD debut is currently surpassing its cinema introduction significantly. Despite a relatively low box office performance, the movie will end up making money due to its affordable production budget of just $20 million. To date, the film has earned $22.7 million domestically and $67.8 million globally.

Under the direction of Kravitz, who collaborated with E.T. Feigenbaum on the script, the movie titled Blink Twice centers around a diverse group of individuals who receive an invitation to the secluded island owned by tech magnate Slater King (Channing Tatum). At first, the island seems like a dreamy paradise, but as events unfold, peculiar occurrences begin to take place – particularly affecting the female attendees. Alongside Tatum, the film features Naomi Ackie, Christian Slater, Adria Arjona, Simon Rex, Haley Joel Osment, Kyle MacLachlan, Geena Davis, and Alie Shawkat.

Despite the notion that films released in late August often indicate studio discards with fingers crossed, Amazon MGM Studios managed to impress critically with Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut. The movie earned a 74% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising it as “a daring and unforgettable debut that propels Zoë Kravitz into the realm of directors to watch, Blink Twice is an electrifying cinematic experience.
