Initially, Katie Cassidy’s character, Laurel Lance, was central to every season of Arrow. However, her journey on the series took an unexpected turn in Season 4 when Earth-1 Laurel, the role Cassidy had played since the show’s inception, was brutally killed by Damien Darhk. Last year, Arrow‘s co-creator Marc Guggenheim expressed remorse over this decision. Recently, Cassidy has opened up about discovering Laurel’s fate and her subsequent return as Black Siren, the counterpart from Earth-2.
How Katie Cassidy Learned Laurel Lance Was Being Killed Off
Katie Cassidy discussed a challenging phase in her acting career during an interview on “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum.” She admitted that she had to swallow her pride when her character was written off ‘Arrow.’ According to Cassidy, it all began when she and the main cast received an email suggesting a one-on-one lunch with showrunners Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle for a casual update on future seasons. However, Cassidy felt uneasy about this as she later revealed.
In an unexpected moment, my tummy took a sudden plunge, and I found myself texting Marc Guggenheim, whom I deeply appreciate. I blurted out something like, ‘Marc, I’ve just received an email suggesting we have lunch, but I’m feeling quite uneasy. Could we possibly chat tomorrow instead of waiting until the weekend? Please?’ To my relief, he responded, ‘Wow, you’re quite perceptive. I’ll give you a call tomorrow.’
This conversation took place while Katie Cassidy was in New York for the New York Comic-Con with the rest of the Arrow cast. During the Season 4 premiere, it was established that one of the main characters would meet a grave end, and on this call, Guggenheim informed Cassidy that it was her character Laurel who had met this fate. This call also included fellow co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. Initially, Cassidy was upset about the news, but later expressed her thoughts on why she believed she was chosen for this role:
It appears to me that several factors were at play. I’ve developed some hypotheses. I believe the situation was influenced by politics. It’s quite complex. In a professional manner, I simply expressed my feelings, stating that I felt I had been consistently disadvantaged and needed to move on. I ended the call and shed tears out of sadness. Stephen contacted me promptly, apologizing and expressing regret that it was me who was affected. I had put in a lot of effort into that show and the character, and I genuinely enjoyed it.
In the Arrowverse, Laurel Lance’s story on Earth-1 concluded (but not entirely, as flashbacks, dreams, and visions were still part of it). However, Katie Cassidy’s presence on Arrow didn’t end there. Instead, we can credit The Flash for her comeback in Season 5, a role she continued to play until the show’s conclusion.
How Katie Cassidy Learned She’d Come Back As Black Siren
In the Season 2 episode “Invincible” of The Flash, we were first introduced to Black Siren, who was then an ally of Zoom. Unlike Earth-1’s Laurel, who used a device for her sonic scream, Black Siren possessed this ability naturally. Katie Cassidy shared her recollection of being asked to join The Flash series in a casual manner.
Two weeks ago, I received a call from none other than Andrew Kreisberg, an incredible guy in the industry. He asked if I’d be interested in joining The Flash and playing my doppelgänger, Black Siren. Needless to say, I was thrilled! This sounds amazing! Yes, please! So, I returned to The Flash set and played a character who was essentially the opposite of Laurel.
It turns out that making an occasional appearance on The Flash was a good decision, as the character “Invincible” resonated well with fans. This positive response convinced Marc Guggenheim to reintroduce Cassidy’s character into Arrow, where she would continue to portray Earth-2 Laurel. In her own words:
It’s clear that the audience was behind me during my appearance on The Flash, as the ratings for that episode were exceptionally high. Conversely, Arrow’s viewership decreased somewhat after they wrote off my character. I’m not entirely certain, but I did receive a call from Marc Guggenheim following the airing of The Flash, expressing interest in having me return as a series regular, hinting that they might have made an error in my departure.

Stephen Amell, from the show Arrow, shared insights on why the early seasons of working on the DC TV series were so demanding. In simpler terms, he said that it was like holding on for dear life (white-knuckling it).

In Season 5 of Arrow, Katie Cassidy appeared as Black Siren for four episodes, later returning to her role as a series regular in Season 6. Initially portrayed as a more typical antagonist, her character eventually transformed into an ally for Team Arrow after redeeming herself. Originally slated to star in the Green Arrow and the Canaries spinoff, along with Katherine McNamara and Juliana Harkavy reprising their roles as Mia Smoak and Dinah Drake, respectively, this project was unfortunately cancelled by The CW early in 2021.
Lucky for you, you can relive Katie Cassidy’s time on the TV show Arrow by subscribing to Netflix and streaming the series. Following that, the actress will be starring in a psychological thriller titled Nanny-Cam, which is currently being filmed in New Jersey.
